Inesperada Asunción

Although Paraguay is not so far from Uruguay, I had never been there before; an unexpected trip to Iguassu falls let me spend a few days in this "brother country". Both countries have a common history (not a nice one, for sure); sad episodes of our past join us, despite they are very different places.
Everybody had told me about Asuncion "do not expect too much; it is not a nice city"; I was there only for two days, but I was immediately attracted to it... I found a very picturesque city, with beautiful colonial buildings, lush vegetation everywhere, and a magnificent bay; but what impressed me most was the warmth of the people.
Of course, a couple of days are not enough to know a place (a whole life is?), so here you will find only a few impressions... and the wish to come back some day.

Aunque Paraguay no se encuentra lejos de Uruguay, you nunca había estado allí antes; un inesperado viaje a las cataratas del Iguazú me dio la oportunidad de pasar unos pocos días en este "país hermano". Ambos países tienen una historia en común (nada agradable, por cierto); episodios tristes nos unen, a pesar de tratarse de lugares tan diferentes.
Todo el mundo me había dicho "no esperes demasiado de Asunción; no es una ciudad linda"; estuve allí solamente un par de días, pero me sentí inmediatamente atraída por ella... Encontré una ciudad muy pintoresca, con hermosos edificios coloniales, vegetación exuberante por todos lados y una magnífica bahía; pero lo que más me impresionó fue la calidez de su gente.
Claro que un par de días no son suficientes para conocer un lugar (lo es una vida entera?) por lo que encontrarán aquí sólo unas pocas impresiones... y el deseo de volver algún día.

Muchas gracias, Andal, for your very insightful observations of Asuncion. For some crazy reason , I have an obsession with Paraguay and I hope to leave Canada and head south soon. (Montevideo might be nice to see also!) :-)

Evocadoras e inspiradas palabras sobre este rinconcito prácticamente desconocido de Sudamérica. Ojalá pueda conocer algún día el Chaco en toda su inmensidad.
