Templo de Debod

You can visit an Egyptian temple if you are in Cairo, of course... but in Madrid? The Temple of Debod (4th century BC) is a gift that Egypt gave to Spain. It can be visited and one of the best sights of Madrid can be seen from this place.

Puedes visitar un templo egipcio cuando estás en El Cairo, claro.. ¿pero en Madrid? El Templo de Debod (siglo IV AC) es un presente que Egipto le hizo a España. Puede ser visitado y una de las mejores vistas de Madrid se pueden ver desde este lugar.

Ambassadors' Parade

I was walking down Calle Mayor on a Thursday morning, when suddenly appeared some old-fashioned knights and carriages... I asked a policeman what was that, and he told me it was the Ambassadors' Parade: that day, Ambassadors go to Royal Palace and greet the King.

Iba caminando por la Calle Mayor una mañana de jueves, cuando súbitamente aparecieron varios jinetes vestidos a la antigua usanza, y carruajes... Le pregunté a un policía de qué se trataba, y me dijo que era el Desfile de los Embajadores: ese día los Embajadores van al Palacio Real y presentan sus repetos al Rey.

Probably the most picturesque and delightful town at Provinica de Madrid, Chinchón seems to live at 16th century. The village lays nearby a hill with a ruined castle on the top, protagonist of bloody fights in the past.
Narrow streets, balconies, and a special atmosphere, makes Chinchón an unforgettable place.

Probablemente el pueblo más pintoresco y encantador de la Provincia de Madrid, Chinchón parece vivir en el siglo XVI. El pueblo se asienta a los pies de una colina que en su cima tiene las ruinas de un castillo, que fue protagonista de sangrientas luchas en el pasado. Estrechas callejuelas, balcones, y una atmósfera especial, hacen de Chinchón un lugar inolvidable.

Chinchón Circus

Chinchón Circus seems to be a typical small town circus, surrounded by ancient buildings with beautiful balconies. Some restaurants and pubs place their tables on it, so you can have a "chinchón" (dry aniseed liquor on the rocks) or a cup of sherry, and enjoy the sunlight. But somethimes, tables are put away... and the circus becomes a bullfight ring!!!

La plaza principal de Chinchón aparenta ser la típica plaza de pueblo, rodeada de edificios antiguos con hermosos balcones. Algunos restaurantes y bares ponen sus mesas en ella, por lo que puedes tomar un "chinchón" (anís seco con hielo) o una copa de jerez, y disfruta del sol. Pero algunas veces, las mesas se guardan... ¡¡¡y la plaza pueblerina se transforma en plaza de toros!!!!

The garlic salesman

Chinchón has a very particular character: the garlics salesman. Sat on his chair, this old man works with garlics, chilipeppers and other stuff inside an odd room. He is the most famous person in town, and he is very proud of the pictures every tourist takes him.
You can buy some aromatic garlics there, and after that, go to a very particular bakery across the circus; there you will find dolls, family shields and lots of things made of bread!!!

Chinchón tiene un personaje muy particular: el vendedor de ajos. Sentado en su silla, este viejito trabaja con ajos, pimientos y otras cosas dentro de una habitación muy particular. Es la persona más famosa del pueblo, y está muy orgulloso de las fotos que los turistas le sacan. Puedes comprar algunos ajos perfumados allí, y luego ir a la panadería que queda al otro lado de la plaza, y allí encontrarás muñecos, escudos familiares y todo tipo de objetos hechos de pan.

El Escorial

Escorial is a town on the hills, where is the most awsome building of Provincia de Madrid: San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Monastery, palace, church, library, royal pantheon, its construction was ordered by King Felipe II (Philip the Second) at 1563.
The town by the monastery is quiet and nice, and there I spent the first (and only) "white Christmas" of my life.

El Escorial es un pueblo en la sierra, en donde se encuentra el más impresionante edificio de la Provincia de Madrid: San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Monasterio, palacio, iglesia, biblioteca, panteón real, su construcción fue ordenada por el Rey Felipe II en 1563. El pueblo ubicado en las cercanías del monasterio es tranquilo y bonito, y en él pasé la primera (y única) "Navidad blanca" de mi vida.

Calle de la lechuga

Some madrilenian streets have odd names (specially at ancient Madrid), like "Calle de la lechuga" (Lettuce St.), "Calle de la pasa" (Raisin St.) or "Calle del codo" (Elbow St.). If you do not understand Spanish, do not worry: the nameplates have drawings. The picture shows "Calle de la lechuga".

Algunas calles madrileñas tienen nombres extraños, especialmente en el Madrid antiguo, como "Calle de la lechuga", "Calle de la pasa" o "Calle del codo". Las placas de las calles, además de los nombres, tienen dibujos. La foto muestra la "Calle de la lechuga".

Calle del Codo

Another curious street name: "Calle del Codo" (Elbow's Street). This narrow street at ancient Madrid bends like an elbow, as we suspect from the begining.

Otro nombre curioso para una calle: "Calle del codo". Esta callejuela en el Madrid antiguo se acoda, como lo sospechamos desde un principio.
