  • El Madrid de los Austrias (Austrias' Madrid) is the oldest district; there you will walk along narrow streets, find ancient buildings (16th - 17th centuries) and magnificent Plaza Mayor (Main Square), surrounded by historical buildings and archs. This picture shows Arco de Cuchilleros (Cutler's Arch).

  • You left behind the Cibeles, and begin to walk along Paseo de los Recoletos, till you find Jardines del Descubrimiento (Discovery Gardens). Columbus receives you on the top of a column, and resounding waterfalls invite you to take a walk around this nice place. Under the waterfalls there is a cultural centre.

  • There are some interesting museums at Madrid, but three of the most important art museums are very close one to the other: Prado, Reina Sofía and Tyssen. You can find there excellent painting collections, from Goya to Picasso, from Velázquez to Juan Gris, from primitive Italians to pop-art. Visiting each one can take several hours, so put your most comfortable shoes on!!

  • Reina Sofía is an interesting museum situated in an ancient hospital; it houses an amazing collection of modern art. There can be seen works of painters like Picasso, Dalí, Juan Gris and Miró.
Probably the most important masterpiece is Picasso's "Guernika", which represents the horror of Spanish Civil War (the northern town of Guernika was shelled by the nazis in 1937, on request of General Franco).
I knew this painting, of course, but I cannot describe with words the emotion I felt when I met this touching picture.

  • Bullfighting is a national passion; if you are interested, you must visit Las Ventas, the main bull ring. But even if you do not like this activity, you can visit it (when there are no bullfightings!), because it is a very nice and traditional building.

  • Atocha Station is a magnificent crystal and iron building; inside there is a palm-tree garden. If you have to take a train, go there; if you have not, go in the same way.

    "...halfway
    between hell and heaven...
    I get off at Atocha,
    I do stay in Madrid..."
