The walls

The walls of Toledo date from the Roman age; they were rebuilt by the Visigoths during the 7th century, and subsequently the Arabian continued them.

Las murallas de Toledo datan de la época romana; fueron reconstruidas por los visigodos en el siglo VII, y posteriormente los árabes las continuaron.

Synagogues

Toledo had a very important Jewish community, so in the past there were many synagogues. Santa María la Blanca was the most important one, built in the 12th century. In 1405, during the persecution against Jewish people, this synagogue was blew off and it became a Christian church (Nuestra Señora la Blanca, "Our Lady the White"). Unfortunately, it was closed when I was in Toledo, so I could not visit this magnificent building.

Toledo tuvo una colectividad judía muy importante, por lo que en el pasado hubo numerosas sinagogas. Santa María la Blanca fue la más importante, construida en el siglo XII. En 1405, durante la persecución a los judíos, la sinagoga fue arrebatada y convertida en iglesia cristiana (Nuestra Señora la Blanca).
Desafortunadamente estaba cerrada cuando estuve en Toledo, así que no pude visitar este magnífico edificio.

Zocodover Plaza de Zocodover Review

Plaza de Zocodover (Zocodover Square) is the main square of Toledo, and its very heart. It was the ancient Arabian market (zocodover means "place of animals"). It is a great place to start a city tour, or just take a seat an watch the life goes by...

Plaza de Zocodover es la plaza principal de Toleda, y su centro vital. Fue el antiguo mercado árabe ("zocodover" significa "el lugar de las bestias"). Es un excelente lugar para comenzar un recorrido por la ciudad, o simplemente para sentarse y ver la vida pasar...

Alcázar Alcazar Review

This fortress was built by King Carlos V (Charles the Fifth) in 1535, over the ruins of an ancient fortress. It was destroyed during the Civil War, and subsequently rebuilt.
From there, you can enjoy the most beautiful sights of Toledo.

Esta fortaleza fue construida por el Rey Carlos V en 1535, sobre las ruinas de una antigua fortaleza. Fue destruida durante la Guerra Civil, y reconstruido posteriormente. Desde aquí se disfrutan las más espectaculares vistas de Toledo.

Cathedral (3) Cathedral of Saint Mary Review

Puerta de los Leones (Lyon's Gate) is one of the several entrances; this one was built at 15th century, and it's the most beautiful one, in my humble opinion.

La Puerta de los Leones es una de las varias entradas a la Catedral; ésta fue construida en el siglo XV, y es la más bella de todas, en mi modesta opinión.

Cathedral (2) Cathedral of Saint Mary Review

The picture shows the dome of "mozárabe" chapel; in this chapel, services follow the Gothic ritual (the ancient one), instead the Gregorian ritual.

La foto muestra la cúpula de la capilla mozárabe; en esta capilla, los servicios religiosos siguen el antiguo ritual gótico, en lugar del gregoriano.

Cathedral Cathedral of Saint Mary Review

Toledo's Cathedral is a beautiful sample of Gothic architecture. It was built between 13th and 15th centuries. In this picture you can see
the bell tower; there is a bell known as "la gorda" (the fat); it's said that the first time this bell clang, all city glasses broke.

La Catedral de Toledo es un bello ejemplo de la arquitectura gótica. Fue construida entre los siglos XIII y XV. En esta foto se puede ver el campanario; hay en él una campana conocida como "la gorda"; se dice que la primera vez que sonó, los cristales de toda la ciudad se quebraron.

Imperial Train

One hour trip around Toledo in a "train", shows you the most important places inside and outside the walls, and lets you enjoy beatuiful sights of the river, the ancient bridges and the whole city.
The picture shows Puente de la Alcántara (Alcantara Bridge) and Alcázar, seen from the train.

Un paseo de una hora de duración alrededor de Toledo en un "tren", permite ver los puntos más importantes dentro y fuera de las murallas, y disfrutar hermosas vistas del río, los puentes antiguos y la ciudad en su totalidad.

El Greco El Greco Review

Doménikos Theotokópulos, well known as "El Greco", was a painter who felt in love with Toledo. His masterpiece, "El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz" can be seen at Santo Tomé Church, where also is the tomb of Conde de Orgaz. Positively awesome.

Doménikos Theotokópulos, más conocido como "El Greco", fue un pintor que se enamoró de Toledo. Su obra maestra, "El Entierro del Conde de Orgaz" puede verse en la iglesia de Santo Tomé, en donde también se encuentra la tumba del Conde de Orgaz. Verdaderamente impresionante.
