  • If you leave downtown, you will find nice places which are often unknown for tourists. One of those places is Villa Colón, an old district, with ancient mansions of late 19th century. The most famous is Castillo de Idiarte Borda (Idiarte Borda's Castle); he was a President, and ordered its construction at 1897; he died before the house was finished.
You can visit the house and gardens, and on Saturdays and Sundays, have tea.

  • Montevideo city is surrounded by fields... There are several farms, greenhouses, vineyards, fruit-trees plantations, that feed the Montevideans. Some of these places can be visited.

  • Uruguayan painting can be seen in several Art Museums; I talked about MuseoTorres García on "Must see activities", because it is a very important museum situated on the most touristic place (Old City). But "off the beaten path" I want to recommend two Art Museums:
Museo de Artes Plásticas y Visuales: Herrera y Reissig and T. Giribaldi (Parque Rodó)
Museo Blanes: Millán 4015 (a beautiful ancient mansion in Prado)

  • Among dozens of new and modern buildings, at the seaside, you can find an odd construction: El castillo Pittamiglio (Pittamiglio Castle). It is not a real castle, but a strange house easily recognizable by the Victory of Samothraki it has at the frontage. The "castle" was built at early 20th century by Humberto Pittamiglio, an architect and alchemist. The house is full of mystery, hidden charms and strange rooms; it houses the Asociación de Promotores Privados de la Construcción (an association), a cultural center and museum. You can visit this building with a guided tour.

  • Punta Brava o Punta de las Carretas (Rough Point or Carts Point) is the Southest point of the Uruguayan coast; at the end it has a lighthouse, which can be visited; the entrance fee is 0,50 U$S; from the top, the sights are awesome.
Althought Punta Carretas is a nice and well known place, close to one of the most fashion areas of the city, it is not common for Montevidean people to visit the lighthouse; the point, however, is full of fishermen under the sunlight, and full of lovers under the moonlight!

Off The Beaten Path: The lighthouse
  • Tip Rating:
  • Punta Carretas lighthouse was inaugurated in 1876; it is 19 m high, and it is situated 34º56'07'' South - 56º09'36'' West. The original machinery is still working (it is a beautiful bronze structure), althought the ancient fuse was substituted for a 1.000 W light bulb. It sparkles white and red light, each 10 seconds; the light can be seen 15 nautical miles away.

  • Montevideo is a common city, with people, traffic, buildings, hustle and bustle... but it has an unique quality: you can see and HEAR birds!!!! And I can assure you this is just wonderful... when you wake up in the morning and you hear their sings!
I took this picture at my backyard... that little bird was standing on the fence.
