Ciudad Vieja and other Montevideo, Uruguay Things to Do Tips

Ciudad Vieja (Old City) is a district nearby the harbour. Some parts of the ancient wall and several colonial houses still remain, despite a lot of constructions were threwn down.
Museums, antiques shops, small cafés, are situated along the narrow streets. On Saturday morning you will find an open market of antiques and old books, and a lot of arts and handcrafts stands. On Sarandí, the main steet, you will see living statues, mimes, musicians, dancers, and if you dare, you can dance tango or candombe!

La Ciudad Vieja es un barrio próximo al puerto. Algunas partes de la antigua muralla y algunas casas coloniales aún permanecen, pese a que muchas construcciones fueron demolidas.
Museos, anticuarios, pequeños cafés, están situados a lo largo de las estrechas calles. Los sábados por la mañana, se desarrolla un mercado abierto de antigüedades y libros viejos, y muchos puestos de venta de artesanías. Sobre Sarandí, la calle principal, se ven estatuas vivientes, mimos, músicos, bailarines, y si te animas, puedes bailar tango o candombe!

Take a walk on the Old City narrow streets, and look up... you will see beautiful colonial balconies. Casa Giró (Cerrito St. and Juan Carlos Gómez St.) has balconies made of crystal!!

Camina por las estrechas calles de la Ciudad Vieja, y mira hacia arriba... verás hermosos balcones coloniales. Casa Giró (Cerrito y Juan Carlos Gómez) tiene balcones hechos de cristal.

At Ciudad Vieja (Old City) still remains colonial street lamps, iron gates, ancient tiles, but sometimes, they are hidden. Try to find them!

En la Ciudad Vieja aún permanecen faroles coloniales, puertas de hierro, azulejos antiguos, pero algunas veces, están escondidos. ¡Trata de encontrarlos!

The natives called Río de la Plata "Paraná Guazú", that means "river as wide as a sea". Montevideo has a beautiful coast on the river-sea (actually, an estuary), with very nice beaches, like Punta Espinillo, La Colorada, Santa Catalina, Cerro, Ramírez, Pocitos, Malvín, Verde, Honda, Carrasco...

The picture shows Playa Ramírez, a popular beach close to Parque Rodó.

Los nativos llamaron al Río de la Plata "Paraná Guazú", es decir, "río grande como mar". Montevideo tiene una hermosa costa sobre el río (en realidad, un estuario) con playas muy lindas, como Punta Espinillo, La Colorada, Santa Catalina, Cerro, Ramírez, Pocitos, Malvín, Verde, Honda, Carrasco...

It is an open market that takes place on Sunday mornings at Tristán Narvaja Street. It is a flea market, and there you can find antiques, old records (from Gardel to Beatles), old books, pets, plants, sunglasses, clothes, or even false teeth!
Another kind of flea market takes place at Plaza Matriz (Matriz Square, Old City) on Saturday mornings; there you cand find antiques.

Es un mercado abierto que tiene lugar los domingos de mañana en la calle Tristán Narvaja. Es un mercado de pulgas, y allí se pueden encontrar antigüedades, discos viejos (desde Gardel hasta los Beatles), libros viejos, mascotas, plantas, lentes de sol, o incluso dentaduras postizas! Otro tipo de mercado de pulgas se lleva a cabo en la Plaza Matriz los sábados de mañana; aquí se pueden encontrar antigüedades.

Plaza Independencia is the main square; it is the limit between Ciudad Vieja (Old City) and downtown. The square is decorated with palm-trees and fountains; an equestrian statue of our national hero, José Artigas, is situated at the middle of the square; behind and beneath it, it is the Mausoleo, where is an urn with Artiga's rests.

Plaza Independencia es la plaza principal; está situada en el límite entre la Ciudad Vieja y el Centro. La plaza está decorada con palmeras y fuentes; una estatua ecuestre de nuestro héroe nacional, José Artigas, está ubicada en el medio de la plaza; por detrás y debajo de la misma, se encuentra el Mausoleo, en donde se preserva la urna con los restos de Artigas.

Joaquín Torres García was an Uruguayan artist that revolutioned modern painting; his style, called "constructivismo", was the beginning of a new era.
Several of his works (and his followers) can be seen at his Museum.
You can find here interesting temporal expositions, too.

Joaquín Torres García fue un artista uruguayo que revolucionó la pintura moderna; su estilo, denominado "cosntructivismo" marcó el comienzo de una nueva era.
Varias de sus obras (y de sus seguidores) están expuestas en este Museo.

Arts and handcrafts are varied and have high quality; there are several markets and shops with this kind of stuff, but you can even find some artistic expressions on the street!

El arte y las artesanías son variados y de alta calidad; hay diversos mercados y tiendas de artesanías, pero se pueden encontrar expresiones artísticas incluso en la calle!!!

El Prado (the meadow) is one of the several parks of Montevideo (is my favorite one). Trees, fountains, a rosebed, a lake, invite to walk along its alleys or to rest under a tree.

El Prado es uno de los numerosos parques de Montevideo (es mi preferido). Árboles, fuentes, una rosaleda, un lago, invitan a caminar por sus senderos o descansar bajo un árbol.

The charrúas were the natives of the region where Montevideo was founded. After the conquest and the colonization, they fell back during almost a century, until they were practically exterminated by the local authorities in 1830. The last four charrúas were taken to Paris by François Curel in 1833, to be "displayed" like circus attractions; in France ws born Guyunusa and Tacuabé's daughter few months after they were taken. Vaimaca, Senaqué and Guyunusa died during the first year in France. Tacuabé and his baby disappeared, and their tracks missed in Lyon.
Last year (2002) the remains of cacique Vaimaca Perú were finally brought to Uruguay, to be buried.
The picture shows the monument to these last charrúas, erected in 1938 by Pratti, Furest Muñoz and Lussich.

Los charrúas eran los narivos de la región en la cual fue fundada Montevideo. Tras la conquista y la colonización, ellos se replegaron durante casi un siglo, hasta que fueron prácticamente exterminados por las autoridades locales en 1830. Los últimos cuatro charrúas fueron llevados a París por François Curel in 1833, para ser "exhibidos" como atracciones de circo; en Francia naciño la hija de Guyunusa y Tacuabé, unos pocos meses después de que fueron llevados. Vaimaca, Senaqué y Guyunusa murieron durante el primer año en Francia. Tacuabé y su beba desaparecieron, y sus rastros se perdieron en Lyon.
El año pasado (2002) los restos del cacique Vaimaca Perú fueron finalmente traídos a Uruguay para ser sepultados.
