Sea and hills ~ Mar y cerros

by andal13 - last update: Aug 31, 2003

Rambla de los Argentinos
Piriápolis "was born" in 1890, when businessman Francisco Piria bought a lot of lands on the coast, 100 km away from Montevideo. He began the mining of granite quarries, and at early 20th century, when began the "spa boom", he began to build hotels; in 1920 was inaugurated the sea front.
Nowadays Piriápolis is a very popular spa: a lot of people spent their summers here, and the place has all kind of services, for kids and adults: hotels, restaurants, casino, discos, pubs, campings, shops... It has not got the glamour of Punta del Este (here you will never find a top model or paparazzi) but it is cheaper and if you want to meet the "show business", Punta del Este is quite close.
The beach of Piriápolis is not the best, but the adjoining beaches (Las Flores, Playa Verde, Playa Hermosa, Playa Grande, Punta Fría, San Francisco) are really great.
Between you and me, I do not like Piriápolis very much... especially during summertime... There are too many people!!!! The beach, the sea front, the restaurants, are always overcrowded. So why do build this page? BECAUSE I LOVE THE SURROUNDINGS!!! Not so far from the coast, there are several lonely hills, with awesome landscapes, and a great reservation of native fauna, and those are the places that I like!

Cons:"Crowds!!!"
In A Nutshell:"More than just a beach ~ Mucho más que un balneario"

Hola Andrea, the information here is very useful. We´re currently in Montevideo and trying to decide where to go next. Piriapolis looks great, especially the surrounding hills.
