Qoriqancha-Santo Domingo Convent: Santo Domingo de Guzmán

  • Spaniard built Santo Domingo de Guzmán's Church over Incan Koricancha or Qoricancha (Sun's Temple). The earthquake of 1950 part destroyed the christian church, but Incan temple was untouched (the Incas built anti-seismic constructions). The Incan temples were built at 14th century; there were dedicated not only to the Sun, also to the Moon and Constellations. These were foraged by conquerors, because they were decorated with silver and gold statues.
Inside the christian church there is a very important art museum with several paintings of Cusco School. All of them are religious, and shows the syncretism between Spaniard and Incan cultures.

    Sacsayhuaman: Sacsayhuaman
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sacsayhuaman (satisfied falcon) was a citadel near Cusco, used as a store and sanctuary. The constructions are anti-seismic; stones present several angles, and are embeded with no mortar between them.

  • Cathedral, at Plaza de Armas, was damaged during earthquakes; when I visited it (2000), it was being repaired. Its construction lasted 94 years; it is decorated with awesome cedar carving; the main altar is made of silver. The Cathedral has a painting museum, where there is a curious "Last Supper" paintig with local dishes.

Cusco looks like a fantastic destination Andrea! It was interesting to read your tips about how the Inca were clever enough to build their buildings to withstand earthquakes! Very solid looking structures. A great page!
