Potocchi (Explosion)

Inca Huaina-Capac saw this conic mountain and gave it the name of Sumaj Orcko, "magnificent mountain". He tried to take the silver out the rock, but the mountain trembled and talked to him, and said that silver belonged to others. Since that moment the mountain was known as Potocchi, "explosion".
Spanish conquerors discovered the existence of silver, and called the mountain "Cerro Rico" (Rich Hill).
The city of Potosí was founded in 1544, 4.200 m over sea level. Nowadays the mountain is shorter than it was originally, because the silver mining.

Los conquistadores españoler descubrieron la existencia de plata y llamaron a la montaña "Cerro Rico".
La ciudad de Potosí fue fundada en 1544 a 4.200 m sobre el nivel del mar.
Actualmente la montaña es más baja de lo que fue, debido a la extracción de plata.

"Incesantes caravanas de llamas y mulas llevan al puerto de Arica la plata que, por todas sus bocas, sangra el cerro de Potosí. Al cabo de larga navegación, los lingotes se vuelcan en Europa para financiar, allí, la guerra, la paz y el progreso.
A cambio llegan a Potosí, desde Sevilla o por contrabando, vinos de España y sombreros y sedas de Francia, espadas alemanas y papelería genovesa, medias de Nápoles, cristales de Venecia, ceras de Chipre, diamantes de Ceilán, marfiles de la India y perfumes de Arabia, Malaca y Goa, alfombras de Persia y porcelana de China, esclavos negros de Cabo Verde y Angola y caballos chilenos de mucho brío.
Todo es carísimo en esta ciudad, la más cara del mundo. Sólo resultan baratas la chicha y las hojas de coca. Los indios, arrancados a la fuerza de las comunidades de todo el Perú, pasan el domingo en los corrales, danzando en torno a los tambores y bebiendo chicha hasta rodar por los suelos. Al amanecer del lunes los arrean cerro adentro y mascando coca persiguen, a goslpes de barreta, las vetas de plata, serpientes blanquiverdes que que asoman y huyen por las tripas de este vientre inmenso, ninguna luz, aire ninguno. Allí trabajan los indios toda la semana, prisioneros, respirando el polvo que mata los pulmones y mascando coca que engaýa al hambre y disfraza la extenuación, sin saber cuándo anpchece ni cuándo amanece, hasta que al fin el sábado suena el toque de oración y salida. Avanzan entonces, abriéndose paso con velas encendidas, y emergen el domingo al alba, que así de hondos son los socavones y los infinitos túneles y galerías.
Un cura, recién llegado a Potosí, los ve aparecer en los suburbios de la ciudad, larga procesión de fantasmas escuálidos, las espaldas marcadas por el látigo, y comenta:
-No quiero ver este retrato del infierno.
-Pues cierre usted los ojos- le aconsejan.
-No puedo- dice el cura -. Con los ojos cerrados, veo más."

Hace poco vi nuevamente un documental sobre estos mineros.....pues sin embargo no se puede imaginar lo duro que es su vida sin haber estado adentro de las minas.....sin haber visto a esa gente brava y tan pobre...
