When you are in El Calafate, you will find a lot of activities, most of all outside the town (and a lot of km far away!). Here you have some options:
-Horseriding
-Trekking
-Trip to Los Glaciares National Park: Perito Moreno Glacier, Upsala Glacier, "All glaciers"
-Trip to "La Leona" Petrified Forest
-Trip to an "estancia" (ranch)
And many more!
Of course, unless you have a lot of time (and a lot of money) you will have to choose what you want to do!

I have just found what I was looking for!

Why did I came to El Calafate? To visit Los Glaciares National Park, of course! This National Park is 80 Km far from El Calafate, and it is the most amazing, breathtaking, wonderful, incredible, beautiful, awesome, magnificent place I have ever seen!

Flora and Fauna

Do not think of the steppe as a desert place; Patagonia has an amazing flora and fauna, ideal for nature lovers. Of course, the "calafate" rules, but there are another plants adapted to the poverty of the soil and the meagre humidity. Among the animals, you cna find guanacos (a kind of llama), choiques (small American ostrich), maras (Patagonian hare), and the majestic ñacurutú (a kind of owl, the tiny stain in the picture).

No piensen en la estepa como un lugar desértico; Pattagonia tiene una flora y una fauna sorprendentes, ideal para los amantes de la naturaleza. Por supuesto, el calafate domina, pero hay otras plantas adaptadas a la pobreza del suelo y a la escasa humedad. Entre los animales, pueden encontrar guanacos (similar a la llama), choiques (ñandú petiso), maras (liebre patagonica), y el majestuoso ñacurutú (un tipo de búho, la pequeña manchita en la foto).

The name

Why El Calafate is called this way? ("Calafate" means "caulker"). Centuries ago, the ancient ships had a man whose task was to caulk the ship each tim it was necessary; these men, the caulkers used a resin they dug from a thorny bush they found everywhere in Patagonia (Berberis buxifolia); since then, that bush was called "caulker" (calafate), and the town took the name of the bush.

Por qué El Calafate se llama de ese modo? Siglos atrás, los barcos antiguos temían un hombre cuyo oficio era calafatear la nave cada vez que fuera necesario; estos individuos, los calafates, utilizaban una resina que extraían de un arbusto espinoso que encontraban por todas partes en la Patagonia (Berberis buxifolia); desde entonces, el arbusto se ha llamado "calafate", y posteriormente de allí tomó su nombre el pueblo.

Architecture

Despite El Calafate is a small town, it has beautiful buildings; houses and shops have a very nice architecture, where the wood rules; a special care can be seen at the frontages.

A pesar que El Calafate es un pueblo pequeño, tiene hermosas construcciones; casa y locales comerciales tienen una arquitectura muy bonita, en la que reina la madera; un cuidado especial se aprecia en las fachadas.

The landscape

El Calafate is a small town, in the middle of the immense Patagonic steppe; the surroundigs are simply magnificent... Just walk around, enjoy the silence... and listen to the voice of Nature.

El Calafate es un pueblecito, en el medio de la inmensa estepa patagónica; los alrededores son simplemente magníficos... Caminen por allí, difruten el silencio... y escuchen la voz de la Naturaleza.

Main Street

The main street of El Calafate is Libertador Avenue; actually it is a stretch of the route that joins Rio Gallegos with the Andes Range. The "downtown" is concentrated on a couple of blocks; there you will find shops, restaurants, banks, travel agencies, the post office, locutories, hotels, and of course, the square and the church.

La calle principal de El Calafate es Avenida Libertador; en realidad, es un tramo de la ruta que une Rio Gallegos con la Cordillera de los Andes. El "centro" se concentra en unpar de cuadras; allí encontrarán comercios, restaurantes, bancos, agencias de viajes, el correo, locutorios, hoteles, y por supuesto, la plaza y la iglesia.

Redonda Bay

El Calafate is situated by Bahía Redonda (Round Bay), a bay of Lake Argentino. In winter, the bay frozes, and becomes a skaiting ring; in November, the water level descends so much that you can walk across the bay; in summer, flocks of migrant birds come to this place to breed.

El Calafate está situado a orillas de la Bahía Redonda, una bahía del Lago Argentino. En invierno, la bahía se congela y se transforma en pista de patinaje; en noviembre, el nivel del agua baja tanto que se puede cruzar a pie; en el verano, bandadas de aves migratorias vienen a este lugar a procrear.

El Calafate is a small town situated at Province of Santa Cruz, at the Patagonian steppe, in the middle of nowhere...
The Province of Santa Cruz is really huge; its area is 244.000 Km2 (Italy is 294.000), and it has only 200.000 inhabitants. The capitol city is Rio Gallegos, situated at the Atlantic coast. El Calafate is 300 Km far from Rio Gallegos; it has 8.000 inhabitants, and it is a really tourist place, because it is quite close to one of the most beautiful places on earth: Los Glaciares National Park.

El Calafate es un pueblito situado en la Provincia de Santa Cruz, en la estepa patagónica, en el medio de la nada...
La Provincia de Santa Cruz es realmente enorme; su superficie es de 244.000 Km2 (Italia tiene 294.000), y tiene solamente 200.000 habitantes. La capital es Rio Gallegos, situada en la costa atlántica. El Calafate está a 300 Km de Rio Gallegos; tiene 8.000 habitantes, y es un lugar turístico, dada su proximidad con uno de los más bellos lugares de la Tierra: el Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.
