The Penitentiary Museum - Ushuaia

The Penitentiary Museum

Penitentiary Museum

In 1896 the first group of convicts arrived in Ushuaia to begin the reincidents jail (it was a group of houses made of wood and tin); in 1902, the Military Prison, which was situated at Isla de los Estados, was moved to Ushuaia for humanitarian reasons. The same year began the construction of the National Prison; at the time, Ushuaia had only 40 houses. The building was done by the prisoners, and it was finished in 1920. It had five pavilions, and 380 single cells (but sometimes were there more than 600 convicts).
The prisoners had the posibility of primary education and paid jobs.
The jail worked until 1947.
Inside the cells, you will find the history and the stories of the jail and the prisoners.

Close to Ushuaia is Parque Nacional Tierra del Fuego (Land of Fire National Park). This National Park is really huge (63.000 hectares), although only a little part is open to the public (most of the area is destinated to scientifc investigation). This park was created in 1960 and is the only Argentinian park with sea cost. There are camp areas inside the park, and several attractions, besides the wonderful forest and landscape.
Entrance fee: 12 Argentinian pesos (4 $) and 6 pesos for Argentinian people.
If you want more information, you can check my Tierra del Fuego National Park page.

Mundo Yamana - Ushuaia

Mundo Yamana

Yamana Museum

I found this little museum casually, when I was wandering along the streets of Ushuaia; it is a small but touching museum, which shows the geological origin of Tierra del Fuego, the peopling of the place, the way of life of natives (there were four groups: Yamana, Alakaluf, Selk'Nam and Haush), the arrival of European people and the extinction of the local people. The museum is well documented, and the exhibition is very attractive and didactic.

Malvinas Square - Ushuaia

Malvinas Square

Plaza Malvinas

The Malvinas (Falkland) Islands War was one of the saddest episodes of the most recent Argentinian history. There is a touching mamorial in Ushuaia: the monument represents the map of the islands, and it has this inscription:
Volveremos!!!" (The people of Ushuaia, to those... who irrigated with their blood the roots of our sovereignty over Malvinas... We will come back!!!)

The lighthouse at the end of the world

The lighthouse at the end of the world

Jules Verne wrote a novel entitled "The lighthouse at the end of the world"; this lighthouse was situated at Isla de los Estados (an island), and the real name of the lighthouse was San Juan de Salvamento. This lighthouse worked from 1884 to 1902, when a new lighthouse was inaugurated at a close island. In 1997, a replica of the lighthouse of the end of the world was inaugurated at the Maritime Museum in Ushuaia, so you can visit it and feel you are in the end of the world.

Locomovil - Ushuaia

Locomovil

Locomovil

Locomovil (locomobile) was an ancient steam boiler used at the sawmills (one of the jobs that the prisoners had was tree felling); the oddity of this mahcine was its moving condition: some oxen carried it to where it was necessary.

The prisoners train - Ushuaia

The prisoners train

The prisoners train

Between two pavilions, outside the museum, there is a train (actually, the remains of a train); this train was used to carry stones and wood from outside to the jail, and other different stuff from the dock to the jail. It was know as "the prisoners train", and was a narrow gauge train (60 cm).

Carved horns - Ushuaia

Carved horns

Touching stuff

The Penitentiary Museum not only shows the stories of the most famous convicts, photographs, furnitures, documents, clothes, but also exhibits different stuff made for the prisoners, like these carvings made of horn, or an amazing ship made of matches.
These handicrafts show the long spare time these people spent inside that big and cold building, at a place with really long nights.

The Old Jail - Ushuaia

The Old Jail

Spooky place

One of the pavilions is not reconditioned; that means it is just as it was in 1947; this pavilion is really touching and creepy, and the rainy afternoon I visited the place did not help to make it look better.
Anyway, I think this is THE place to visit when you are in Ushuaia.
