Chester in brief. | Eastgate of Chester at night. |
The ancient and beautiful city of Chester is situated in the north west of England, close to the border with North Wales. In addition to its unique covered galleries, known as the Rows, there are countless other architectural gems. The city of Chester possesses the most complete circuit of Roman, Saxon and medieval city walls in Britain.
And also, not forgetting the beautiful Chester cathedral. The present building, founded in 1092 as a Benedictine abbey, was made an Anglican cathedral church in 1541. Many architectural restorations were carried out in the 19th century, but older parts have been preserved. Notable features include the fine range of monastic buildings, particularly the cloisters and refectory, the chapter house, and the superb medieval wood carving in the choir (especially for misericords). Also worth seeing are the long south transept with its various chapels, the consistory court, and the medieval roof bosses in the Lady Chapel.
To learn and understand more about the story and heritage of Chester, the award winning Grosvenor museum situated right in the city center should not be missed. There is an outstanding collection of Roman artefacts that shows how the Romans used to live, at home and at work; paintings of Chester and work by Chester artists in the Art Galleries; a collection of Chester silver; and the Kingsley Natural History Gallery. The changing fashions and lifestyles of people from the late 17th century through to Victorian times are displayed in the Period House. Oh.. the good news is, no admission charges!!!
There are so much more to see, for example, Old Dee bridge, Footbridge, Eastgate clock, Stanley Palace, The Blue bell, Pied bull, Tudor houses, Roman Amphitheater, Roman garden, Minerva Shrine, King Charles Tower, etc...
aiyoyo... so many many places of interests until I got no breath to tell you liao lah.. Go see it for yourself.
So what are you waiting for??? Dun miss out on an absolutely unforgettable historical trip to Chester with me. |
Why Chester??? There are loads to see and do in Chester. Too lazy to walk? Well, you can take a tour around Chester in the open top buses.
Walking along the castle wall will offer the whole tour of Chester city center, minus the shopping at the famous Chester Rows. Come on, move your bum, you get to see more when you walk, passing through centuries of English history, you'll go by a cricket field, see the River Dee, formerly a major trade artery, and get a look at many 18th-century buildings. The wall also goes past some Roman ruins, and it's possible to leave the walkway to explore them. The walk is charming and best of all, free of charge.
It will be Chester's Folk Day on 1 March 2003. So it should be interesting and a fun day out in Chester. It is also a good opportunity to find out more about the history and local custom of the beautiful Chester. |
