Aqualine, over Tokyo Bay - Kisarazu

Aqualine, over Tokyo Bay

Aqualine Expressway linking Kawasaki and Kisarazu

The Aqualine expressway, 1/2 of which is submerged under Tokyo Bay and the other 1/2 upon a bridgeway above the sea, opened with much fanfare in 1997. This links the south industrial section of Kawasaki here to Kisarazu.

Though at first glance appearing to provide "shortcut" through the Tokyo Bay, the fanfare was muted by public criticism of the rather pricey tolls - 3,000 yen per passenger car for single crossing, or for return journey from "Umihotaru" scenic rest area with observation deck, shopping and eating.

There is also a public bus running once or twice an hour which costs up to 1,400 yen for single complete crossing.
