Despite what people say Rome can be done cheaply. I went over in November for 5 nights by getting a cheap flight on ryanair.com and searching for cheap accommodation on the net which added up to an amazing #120 - what a bargain..
I stayed central opposite the piazza venezia (heart of the city) which meant that all the main attractions were fairly nearby. The colosseum, roman forum and palantine from here were less than ten minutes away and are definetly recommended. You are also walking distance from all the main sites including Vatican City, the castle and the Sistine Chapel (one of the many Vatican museums), piazza nuovo (a definite no no for eating unless you want to be ripped off like we were) and the pantheon, the spanish steps where you can find all the designer shops to splash out (or like in my case window shop) and of course the trevi fountain which i definetly recommend.
My tips in Rome would be: 1. Make sure your hotel is central as all the main attractions are near to eachother and it will save a lot of time and effort. 2. Avoid packed buses and gypsies (especially ones carrying babies) - as Rome is well known for pickpockets. 3. Try to do some research in good places to eat as although you can't beat italian food - a lot of restaurants near the tourist areas aren't what they are cracked up to be and purely tourist traps. 4. If you are from the EU - check attractions to see if they offer discounts. 5. Make sure you set out early if you want to see the Sistine chapel as it isn't open in the afternoon. 6. Rome has a lot to offer... so try to read before you go especially with history. 7. If you have enough time take a trip out of Rome - I took a day trip to Pompeii, Naples and Sorrento ... perhaps a little bit rushed but you are never sure when you will be back and it was definetly worthwhile. 8. And last but not least remember you can drink the water in Rome... 9. Enjoy your trip. If you have any questions you want to ask ...send me an e-mail and i'll see if i can help. |

| Pros: | "Tourist Attractions are all very nearby to eachother if you pick the right location, safe, easy to get round, amazing place to go to" | | Cons: | "Restaurants near the tourist attractions often don't serve food that is good value for money, beware of pickpockets and cab drivers" | | In A Nutshell: | "I recommend that everyone should see Rome at least once. This trip can be done in three days if you do a bit of prior planning and stay in the right location without stresses of rushing around the whole of the trip." |
