Things To Do: MOSK: "La Mezquita de Caracas"

  • In July, 27, 1989 they started building a huge mosk. Right now is one of the 2 biggest mosks in Latin America. Mosk, in Spanish is "mezquita". And this one is called "La Mezquita de Caracas". Very few people know it´s full name: Ibrahim Ibin Abdul Aziz Al-Ibrahim. It was built by the engenieer Zuheir Fayez for the muslim comunity. Up to 3.500 persons can gather inside.

I´ve been to mosks in Turkey, but havent been able to visit this one. Is not that simple for a venezuelan-woman-christian. You have to ask for permission, have an appointment, wait.

Two of my cousins (women) finally went. The had to wear something that covered them from head to toe (but I dont believe it was a "burka"). They were not allowed to walk around freely on the inside. They had to stay in an special area destinated to women.

They said it was beautiful. It should be. The outside of the mosk is great.

But what I like the most -about my country- is that very close by there is a huge sinagogue. Here we all live in harmony. Thank God. Any God. Thank God.

Old Caracas (Centro): Iglesia de San Francisco: latinamerican barroc art

  • Iglesia de San Francisco

  • La Iglesia de San Francisco (San Francisco church) was built in between 1745 adn 1887. Is one of the most beautiful churches in Venezuela; is one of the best examples of our local barroc art-architecture (which is not as superb and breathtaking as the mexican barroc style: churrigueresco; or the churches you can find in Peru or in Colombia).

But Iglesia de San Francisco is my very favorite church and I´m very proud of it.

It was declared "National Monument" because on October 14th, 1813, Simon Bolivar recieved the title of "General Captain of the Army of Venezuela" and was named: "El Libertador" (The Liberator). This took place in San Francisco, which is a couples of block from Bolivar's house.

I liked your review! I am flying to Caracas on Nov 25 and boy, I sure will watch those telenovelas, which is a great way to improve my Spanish! By the way, do you know any cheap hostels where I can stay? I see only one on the internet. Thanks
