"Sestrunj island - floating in a parallel universe" Otok Sestrunj by KristaB

Otok Sestrunj Travel Guide: 6 reviews and 9 photos

Sestrunj island is one of many islands in Zadar archipelago.
They don't care for tourists. If you want to buy bread, order one day in advance.
It is rejuvenating resort of numerous expatriates, who left decades ago searching for better future. Most of them are now proud owners of luscious gardens in New Jersey - USA (according to license plates on those few cars we noticed).
Lovely melody, folks speaking Croatian with American accent. Adding some English words - well, many things were not yet invented or known here back then when they left. "Daj mi Kouk!" (Give me Coke) but in Croatian it is Koka Kola, really.

We could hear people laughing and screaming. As we approached the village, it was more frequent and louder, sounded like cheering up some sport event.
Ant it really was - we were lucky to visit this place during one of its two summer events.
Funny, how everyone knows everyone in these places. We were the only real outsider tourists here, and we were recognized as such and taken care off with gentle almost pitiful smiles. I'm sure they knew we are from that boat. Because our boat was one of only two boats down in the port.
Well, some serious fishermen on one large fishing boat came in late in the evening, and went looking for a bar. I could not believe that none of them had ever heard about this island without a bar. They left the port before midnight.

SEstrunj full of lively people who enjoy life. Bocce and daily trips to the beach are a part of the culture. followed by going home, eating something and gathering at the Prislik for nightly entertainments: bocce, playing cards and socializing.

Why are there USA plates there ? Even if there were G-men there wouldn't they have local plates? I guess not.

Is that "boce" game special to Sestrunj or is it played also on the continent under the same name (Venetian dialect ?)

The joys of traveling by boat -- stopping in at the non-tourist spots to see how people really live.
