winter at Malden Park - Windsor

winter at Malden Park

Cross Country Skiing

It is difficult for me to find inspiration to venture out of door during the winter months, except, however on those beautiful crisp days with a fresh layer of clean white snow and bright blue skies as pictured here. We generally don't receive alot of snowfall here in southwestern Ontario, but when we do, I try to get out before it melts for some cross country skiing. My favorite spot is Malden Park. If you don't ski, bring the kids to the toboggan hill or the dog for a walk in the bush.

Directions: Malden Park is located north of the EC Row Expressway and west of Malden Road, the parking lot is accessible from Malden Rd.

outdoor skating rink - Windsor

outdoor skating rink

Free Ice Skating Downtown

A fun winter activity for the entire family is ice skating. In downtown Windsor, there is a free outdoor skating rink at Charles Clark Square.

The rink is open from 10am to 10pm daily from December to March, weather permitting. There is also a concession stand here so you can warm up with a hot chocolate afterwards.

Directions: The rink is located on Chatham street between Goyeau and McDougall, right across from City Hall Square.

Point Pelee Boardwalk - Windsor

Point Pelee Boardwalk

Walk Cycle or Canoe at Point Pelee

There are many sports activities to enjoy at Point Pelee National Park.

Bring your bike and you can cycle from the park entrance to the tip. There are also many short paths to walk, nothing too strenuous....great for families.

You can walk around the boardwalk pictured here and look for frogs, turtles and birds along the way. At the boardwalk you can also rent a canoe and paddle through the marshes.

And lastly, the Point is surrounded by water so there are many beaches for sunning or swimming. Do not, however, swim near the Point, there are dangerous currents here. Pay attention to the posted warnings.

Directions: Point Pelee National Park is located in Leamington, 60kms southeast of Windsor. Follow Hwy #3 from Windsor

along the trail near Kingsville - Windsor

along the trail near Kingsville

Cycle or Hike the Chyrsler Canada Greenway

The Chrysler Canada Greenway is the most southerly link of the Trans Canada Trail. It is built upon abandoned railway beds and stretches for 50 kms from Windsor to Kingsville. The trail is packed gravel and almost entirely flat, easy for cycling or cross country skiing. The most interesting section, I think, is from Harrow to Kingsville. You can park your car in Harrow, and then cycle all the way to Colasanti's Tropical Gardens and back. This will take about 3 or 4 hrs.

See Professional Sports Action across the Border

We are lucky in Windsor, that if we want to see a professional sports game, we only have to travel a short distance across the river to Detroit, Michigan. Here, we can see the Tigers play baseball, the Lions play football, the Pistons play basketball or the Red Wings play hockey.
