8 Days Through Southern Utah

I loved southern Utah, it's exactly my kind of place with stunning scenery and great hiking and photo ops. Our time in Utah was part of a 16 day visit to southwestern USA.

Our Tour of Southwestern USA

We began in Las Vegas and drove 5 days through Arizona arriving in Utah at Monument Valley. We spent a night near here at Bluff, then drove on to Moab where we spent 3 nights, visiting Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.

Leaving Moab we headed north first along 191, then west on I70 and south on 24 which passed through the beautiful scenery of Capitol Reef NP. Near here we finally met up with the scenic route 12 which took us up to a 9200' elevation as we crossed Boulder Mountain. It was here that we encountered a snow storm, with very poor visibility. Combine that with a winding mountain road and a rental car.....makes for a very harrowing experience.

However we all survived unscathed and continued our drive under threatening skies to Panguitch, near Bryce Canyon NP. The storm continued here (only rain thankfully), they said it was the worst storm that Utah had seen for 20 years. It lasted 3 days in all. However, we still enjoyed Bryce Canyon in the rain, but decided the next day to leave the lousy weather behind and drove all the way to Mesquite Nevada where we could at least pass the time indoors, warm and dry playing slot machines and feasting at the All-You-Can-Eat Buffet.

From Mesquite we drove back to Springdale where we checked into our hotel and then spent the afternoon hiking amidst the newly formed waterfalls at Zion National Park. Waterfalls are one advantage to encountering bad weather while on vacation! Like a miracle, the storm passed and the next day brought sunny blue skies again, so we took a detour down to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and still had time for a hike back in Zion that afternoon. Our last day in Utah included one last hike at Zion before the drive back to Vegas.

Nice pictures of Utah - we went through there on the way from Colorado to the North Rim about 15 years ago.

Your tips are great! We are planning a trek out that way, can't wait. I'll be visiting often.

We like the same sort of places -South-west US is such a beautiful place - deep snow in Monument Valley is one of my all-time best memories. -leyle

Whenever I see pictures of Monument Valley I always think of John Wayne movies. Utah is such a beautiful state. We missed Bryce Canyon the last time we were there, so I guess we'll just have to go back. Darn.
