This small little city (or is it a big town ?) counts 2074 Habitants and lays 545 meters above sea level, where the Tarnon flows together into the Tarn, and is an ideal place to set up your tent/mobilehome/unpack your suitcase if you want to explore the "Gorges Du Tarn" and nebourgs (Causse Méjean, Cevenne, Mont Lozère). This proves why it also shelters the headquarter of the Parc national des Cévennes because of it's geographical location.
In the past it was ruled under the authority of the bishop of Mende after a turbulent period of wars caused by strong feudal regime and the religion wars. But now it is a quiet lovely town known for its nature and good kitchen. |

| | Accomodation There are about 5 Campings (2x * and 3x **) and more than a dozen of Hotels and Gîtes and Chambres d'Hôtes. I did one of the small camping’s just outside of the city in the middle of 2 big canyons/hills (dolomite of Rocher de Rochfort) on the Tarnon riverside... marvellous!!
There are a lot of small shops and boutiques, one cyber café and many restaurants and cafés. |
I didn't visit the centre much as I was more interested in the nature around it, but you must visit it once, it has it charms too! Although there are a lot of nice towns in the region, it lost probably most of it old charms by redecoration/renovation due the many tourist income but it didn't bothered/noticed me too much. | | |
