What a fantastic hotel......the staff are friendly and helpful and make it a really pleasant stay.

For carnival time you have to book very early (we booked around 6 months in advance for 2003). For our 2004 trip we still tried to book very early but ended up staying in the Villa Igea (which is the sister hotel of the Savoia and Jolanda and is attached to the back of the main hotel as an annexe). However, you still check in and out, have your breakfast etc in the Savoia and Jolanda.

The Villa Igea is just as nice inside so either one would be great but you can't get the views of the lagoon from the Villa Igea.

One day I'd like to fork out for a room at the S&A with a view of the lagoon which is obviously much more expensive but worth every penny I'm sure.

Our twin, en-suite room worked out at about £60 each per person, per night (booked through one of the discount hotel booking websites on the Net) and included a fantastic buffet breakfast - Bacon, sauages, scrambled eggs, toast, cold meats, cerals, yoghurt, danish pastries, etc etc)

Unique Qualities: The location is superb, overlooking the lagoon right on the Grand Canal.

It's 2 doors down from the Danieli, and only a couple of minutes walk from the Bridge of Sighs and St Marks Square.

All the main waterbus stops are just nearby so it's as central as it's possible to be.

Marco Polo airport is 30 minutes away by direct water taxi (expensive) or 1 hour away by Vaporetto which I think was about 10 Euros?? The vaporetto ride can be a bit cramped but isn't a bad journey and is vastly cheaper than a watertaxi.

If you fly to Treviso you have to get a connecting bus to Piazzale Roma and then a vaporetto to St Marks Square which is a real pain and not something I'll be doing again in a hurry.

From St Marks Square, walk along the Grand Canal across 2 (I vaguely recall) small bridges. You should pass the Danieli and it's next door but one. It has a big canopy outside over the outdoor part of the restaurant.

Located in Campo San Zaccaria which is a pretty little square with the most beautful church (which you MUST go and have a look inside).

This hotel was very nice. We stayed in room 1 which is actually at the rear of the main hotel, with another one or two rooms. It has a separate entrance in the alley behind the main hotel and a nice little landing at the top of the marble stairs to the rooms.

The room was lovely, quite small but manageable with traditionally decorated furniture. The bathroom was quite small but nice and had the usual shampoos etc left every day.

The continental breakfast was good enough to fill up on before a day out and you can have it served to you in your room instead of the little breakfast room if you prefer.

Unique Qualities: Central location. Very near to St Marks square and easy to get to Rialto. The rooms at the top of the hotel apparently look out on San Zulian church according to their website.

Pricewise, it is a good price for the standard of hotel but is still a bit expensive. I booked through one of the discount websites on the internet and paid £640 for 5 nights (total cost for 2 people in a twin room) bed and breakfast.
