"Streets filled with water, Please advise" Robert Benchley
I fell in love with this City as soon as I set eyes on it and each time I've got back on the boat to start the journey home I have shed a few quiet tears. Some may see it as a bit cheesy to feel that way about Venice but I'm sure lots of people feel the same upon leaving some of their favourite places in the world?
I am lucky enough to have been to Venice on three occasions and plan to make many more trips (when the EuroMillions jackpot reached £76million recently my colleague and I bought our tickets and spent our lunch hour looking for a suitable property on the 'Net - she found a vineyard in Tuscany for 27million Euros, I found a Venetian Palazzo, a mere snip at about 4.5million Euros!).
I have only ever been at Carnival time and intend to make this an annual trip until such time as I get tired of swanning around in my ball gown and mask having my picture taken! The Venice Carnival runs each year in the two weeks leading up to Lent, which means the weather is a bit hit and miss; but in my opinion Venice in bad weather is even more beautiful than Venice in good weather - just a bit impractical for a Carnival costume!

So hmmm..... What is it about this unique and peculiar place that I think makes it so special?
- There is nowhere on earth quite like Venice (except maybe the Venetian Resort Hotel in Las Vegas????). I saw a TV programme some time ago about how the Vegas hotel was built. The owner Sheldon Adelson had been to Venice on honeymoon and was so inspired that he had his Sands Hotel demolished to replace it with a $2.5billion replica of the most famous parts of Venice. He was so fanatical about the details that with only a couple of weeks to go before the grand opening he decided the colour of the grand canal was wrong and had the 586,000 gallons of water drained, the canal repainted and refilled.
- It's eccentric and strange and beautiful and serene all at the same time.
- The amazing history.
- The way you can be on a main route one minute and then almost instantly be in a tiny alleyway that becomes a dead end, leaving you wondering where you went wrong but how glad you were that you found this place that would have otherwise gone undiscovered. You will try to remember how you got to this location and most likely never be able to never find it again! Being a bit lost in Venice is one of the greatest feelings....
- No cars!
I'm sure there are more and 'll add them as they pop into my head.....
