Venice is meant to be viewed on foot. So do that. Walk as much as you can. Stop the museum hunting and try to dissapear in the alleys. As far as you go the sunbeaten tourists, the more you will understand what means to live in Venice, now or 400 years ago. I spent endless hours walking all over the islands, near and around tourist attractions, without the use of a map and so many times I experienced the joy of a discovery when I steped onto another masterpiece of a architecture or a beautiful piazza, or a peculliar little shop. Walk day and night, It is always safe. But offcourse don't really throw away your map. You will need it to get back to your hotel!
