Some touristy Information Alpe d'Huez is one of Europe's largest and highest ski resorts. It is also one of only 20 resorts in the world - all in Europe - with a lift-served vertical of over 2000 metres (6560 feet). Built above the original village of Huez, the resort has expanded in all directions over the past 20 years. Today it is big and vibrant, with far more shopping and 'things to do' off the slopes than in most other ski centres, especially by French standards. The vast array of off-slope facilities includes aerobics, rifle shooting, archery, body building, classical music concerts, curling, golf, ice driving, jazz dance, martial arts, squash, sumo wrestling and tennis. |
| | The resort has a reputation for both good snow falls and good sunshine with south facing slopes - the lower areas are protected by more than 400 snow cannons. There is a huge beginners area directly above the resort. Those who go to the top of the lifts will be able to see a fifth of France on a clear day. Summer skiing on the Sarenne glacier is an attraction in July and August.
The ski area pass is called Visalp, and Alpe d'Huez is keen to promote its multi-functional usefulness. Aside from access to the lifts, the Visalp Pass also gives you free or discounted entry to a range of attractions including two swimming pools, the ice rink, sports hall and museum.
Alpe d'Huez is by far the largest of the resorts on the lift-linked Grandes Rousses pass, which extends over 220 km (135 miles) of lift-linked terrain and includes Villard - Reculas, Le Chatelard, Maronne, Auris en Oisans, Oz Station (Oz-en-Oisans) and Vaujany. |
Beauty of Nature Now after the General Touristy Information I would like to add a few words about the magic of this place... Staying on the balcony of my hotel I couldn't see my own fingers when I was stretching my hands out. It felt like I was swimming in thick milk, only that this milk was good for breathing... "What a FOG!"I though... Those of you who already know me better have an idea how much I love the freezing air and the ice... The little sharp blades of the fog were pinching the skin of my smiling face... And then the fog split and I sow the mountains.... their peaks - hiding up in the clouds and their foot - lost underneath... more clouds... And then it struck me! What I thought to be a fog were the clouds crawling up and down the mountainsides! The view was breath taking... It was one of that rare moments when I wished to stop the time as there could not be a place more beautiful... so beautiful it hurt... | | |
