The Problem with Venice

by nancyw - last update: Aug 11, 2006

It's a matter of synonyms

Small hidden gardens are special treats
After twelve days in Venice, I was frustrated. It was about the language. Every new view, every new encounter I tried to think of a way to describe Venice. Magical, fabulous, enchanting, beautiful...but after 12 days, I quickly ran out of synonyms!

Other VT'ers have said that a few days in Venice is plenty. Even after almost two weeks (two of those days spent on day trips in the Veneto), I didn't wander all the streets/see all the sites I'd have liked to.

I'm committed to going back to Venice soon - this time, I'll take along a Thesaurus!

Getting lost and finding wonders

Getting lost in Venice is part of the fun. Each morning as I headed out, I never knew where I'd end up. Rarely did I head toward a specific restaurant or destination, instead I'd just wander until I found a spot I wanted to stay awhile.

You can never get completely lost. Eventually you'll see signs on buildings "Per San Marco" or "Per Vaporetto" along with other majoy locations - just follow the signs.

I took a $3 compass with me and it was useful when I wanted to head toward a specific area. Saved me a few steps and brought a lot of laughs when I showed it to my sweaty friends (July/Aug. in Venice is steamy) - it had a temperature gauge on it and a chart to determine the wind chill factor. Odd combo with a compass. If I'm lost, do I really want to confirm how cold I feel?

Pros:"Unique and beautiful"
Cons:"Expensive and packed with tourists"
In A Nutshell:"Venice is worth more than a 1 or 2 day stay"
