| The rugged coast of Pitcairn Island |
Another stop on the around-the-world cruise was Pitcairn Island. The island is tiny, but famous because it is home to the descendants of Fletcher Christian and other mutineers from the "Bounty".
Because the island has a very rugged coast, without docking facilities that could accommodate the ship's tenders, we couldn't go on the island. Instead, the vast majority of the islanders used longboats to come out and board the ship.
They spent the day posing for photos and selling their wares - it seemed everyone wanted Pitcairn stamps and t-shirts.
While I'm glad I had the chance to meet Fletcher Christian's descendants and talk about what daily life is like on a tiny island in the middle of the South Pacific, I wouldn't recommend it as a destination. Other than the few cruise ships which stop there (very rarely), there are no commercial options for getting to the island. |

hunterV Sun Mar 2, 2008 19:03 UTC Thanks for your page! | jadedmuse Fri Aug 26, 2005 23:28 UTC This place really intrigues me. Tks for at least posting a pix and a description of your experience. I always thought I'd get there one day. As time passes, the possibility becomes more remote. Glad to at least see your page. Tks. | Bwana_Brown Sun May 8, 2005 22:23 UTC Thanks for the information about this remote spot - that coastline does look rather forbidding!! Those mutineers knew what they were doing if they were trying to 'hide' from the world! | pchamlis Fri Feb 25, 2005 03:51 UTC I second American Tourister's WOW. THE only Pitcairn Island page. Congratulations. |
