Taxi prices (correct Sept 09) and other Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt Transportation Tips

Getting TO/AROUND: These prices are the ones fixed by the local Sinai government.The fixed price sticker for each type of taxi should be fixed in clear view on one of the windows,but may be hidden.They are about 4" across and round.I will update these prices if they change.

To work out the price of the complete journey that is not listed just add the 2 or 3 legs together. I.E. from Hadaba to the airport in a taxi it would be LE 15 for the Hadaba to Naama Bay plus LE 20 for Naama Bay to the airport making a complete fare of LE 35.
Unfortunately you will never get these prices from the taxis inside the airport,they normally want at least 4 times the proper rate. To get these prices we walk the 100 yards from the terminal building up to the main road and get one from there,these will still try it on but can be beaten down to the right price pretty easily.

Getting TO/AROUND: Taxi seems to be the way to get around,but make sure you set the price before you go anywhere and be prepared to argue with the driver even if you do agree a price.I needed to take a trip in a taxi, have the taxi wait for 2 minutes and then bring me back.A good deal for the driver because he already had me paying for his trip back to the taxi rank.We got half way to our destination when he turned around to me and said that the price we had agreed was no good to him anymore and that if I did not pay him more he would not take me back.I said nothing.He did wait and took me back but he only got what we agreed.Not a happy taxi driver, so be warned.There are 3 different kinds of taxi in Egypt.There is the Peugeot estate taxi,yes, they are all peugeots,that are used for the longer trips and because they are 7 seaters are the most expensive,these have a blue bonnet.Next are the "local" taxis as they are called.These are usually saloon cars,Ladas etc but they do sometimes use old estates,these have white bonnets.Both of these taxis have identical blue and white bodywork except for the bonnet .They both have a fixed price sticker in the windscreen.Cheapest of all is the Mini bus.These only follow set routes but most destinations are covered.These carry about 15 people and are dirt cheap.The maximum fare on a mini bus at time of writing is LE3(30p)
You may have trouble getting a mini bus to stop for you if you are standing outside a hotel,they dont like to pick up tourist,they prefer to let the taxis try and rip you off.
