The Gothic quarter (Barrio Gotico). Barri Gòtic Review

Favorite thing: This is the oldest area of the city and it is situated on the east side of Las Ramblas (see tip).

The main attraction of Barrio Gotico is the Cathedral. The first one was completely destroyed by the Moors in 985. The present version was begun in 1298 and completed in 1892.

One of the nicest squares in this area is Plaza Del Rey. The Royal Palace with the Salò de Tinell (a long room used for temporary exibitions) is located here. It is said that Ferdinand and Isabel received Columbus on his return from the New World in this room.

Another place in this area I like very much is the courtyard of the Museum Frederic Mares. It is a nice place to rest a bit.

Las Ramblas. Las Ramblas Review

Favorite thing: Las Ramblas is a 1,2 km long pedestrian promenade situated between Plaza de Catalunya and the harbour. It is made by six sections. For this reason its proper name is Ramblas; plural.

Each section of this street has a name. The first, coming from Placa de Catalunya is named Rambla dels Canaletes; then we find Rambla dels Estudis; Rambla de les Flors; Rambla dels Caputxins; R. de Santa Monica and Rambla del Mar.

The name rambla derives from the Arabic word ramla, meaning sandy riverbed.

On this boulevard there are various shops, stalls; cafes and restaurants.

The nearest metro stops to Las Ramblas are; Liceu; Drassanes (green line); or Catalunya (green or red line).

Sitges. Day Trip Review

Favorite thing: Sitges is a beautiful sea side town only 35 kilometers south of Barcelona. It has a long beach, several restaurants, cafes and shops.

In this town there are three museums to visit. These were closed when we went there, because of a public holiday. One of the museums (or two...I don't know) is in the Maricel Palace. This is made of a group of buildings behind the old church. This palace looks like a white citadel.

I went to Sitges from Barcelona by train. I took it from Passeig de Gracia train station. You could also take one from Sants station.
