Dali is a great place to chill out and relax. There are hundreds of things to do and see. There are some excellent restaurants and great cafés to hang out. There are alleyways and cobblestone streets. It has a different atmosphere than Lijiang though I can't decide which I prefer. Dali to me seemed kinda of "frontierish" Most backpackers seem to prefer Dali over Lijiang. It's definately not as charming as Lijiang, but you get to escape the hordes.... and I mean hordes of tourists in Lijiang. The Bai people are friendly and make some excellent food. Much of the ancient city wall is still intact giving an interesting medieval impression. The wall also provides some excellent views of the surrounding countryside, city and all the way down to Erhai Lake.
