Korean War Memorial: Korean War memorial
  • Tip Rating:
  • a detailed museum dedicated to wars that have taken place in Korea, or Koreans have been involved in. From the Three Kingdoms period to modern day wars.. It's very interesting and there are some really interested displays but I was not impressed with the lack of english information.

    Deoksugung (Palace): Deoksugong
  • Tip Rating:
  • one of the many palaces in Seoul. Is situated right across from City Hall. The main entrance (facing city hall )to the palace had recently been renovated. Before the renovation you had to use a side entrance. So maybe thats why many people seem to miss this palace on their travels. Like all the palaces in Seoul it provides a breath of fresh air and an escape from the congested streets. This palace is usually pretty quiet. For me it's most memorable in the fall when the huge trees change colour.
The National Museum of contemporary Art is also on the palace grounds.

One of my favourite streets in Seoul is the alley that goes behind Deosugung. To the left of the main entrance is a little street that's great for walks and relaxing. I highly recommend walking around there

    Changgyeonggung (Palace): Ch'angdokkung Palace
  • Tip Rating:
  • I visited this palace in the spring. It was beautiful with all the cherry blossoms. Being one of the first nice days of the season and a Sunday there were many many people there.

    Insadong: wandering around
  • Tip Rating:
  • My favourite activity in seoul is to wander around aimlessly (more or less) This past fall i spent a half day wandering around the hilly area just north of Insadong (or Anguk station) There are some beautiful views wandering through the quiet alleys in the area. There are loads of art galleries and cafe's as well as interesting architecture old and new.

Directions: get off at Anguk station and walk north... make sure you use the smaller streets and alleys and not the main road!

Things To Do: City Hall (Seoul Plaza)
  • Tip Rating:
  • The area infront of Seoul City hall was once only a mass of congested roads. Recently it has been transformed as part of the Seoul beautification project in to Seoul's Citizens park. where once there were roads there is a water fountain, gardens and grass. It's a nice area to pass through. It's the center of Seouls Financial district, and there are also many tourist related things to see in the area such as Deoksugung Palace.

  • It was really interesting walking through the courtyards and seeing the rising buildings that surround the palace.

    Yeouido (Island): Yeoido
  • Tip Rating:
  • Is the place to go for outdoor sports activities... in the warmer months.. You will be of course joined by thousands of others... The park is located on the north side against the river. There are bike rentals (3000won for a hour) ducks boats, bike trails... people to watch... beer , soju, coffee, pizza, kimbap.. just about everything you can think off. There are some good views of the 63 building.. the biggest building in korea... though it is soo simple in design Koreans love it!

Jongmyo (Royal Shrine): Joseon Ancestral History
  • Tip Rating:
  • Jongmyo is where the Joseon Royal's were enshrines . The whole shrine is a huge area full of trees and gardens. It's a great escape from the noise of the city.

On the first sunday of May the ancestral rites are performed. The ritual involves about two thousand people who offer goods to the ancestors, sing and march to GyongBukGung.

Unesco has recognized the ritual music as an important intangible cultural asset.

Namsan (South Mountain) and Seoul Tower: Seoul Tower
  • Tip Rating:
  • Namsan is a great place to get some exercise, breath some fresh air and get great views of seoul... and it's right downtown. The Tower itself is at the top of the mountain. It is accesible by cablecar or by walking up. It has recently been renovated and has some yummy food and interesting souveniers to buy. If you are fortunate to grab a table on the terrace overlooking the south of the city, you can see the Han river and other attractions like the never ending apartments that continue for as far as the eye can see.

There are many "famous" donkass (port cutlet) restaurants around the entrance to the cable car... if you are looking for a nice way to walk down, choose one of the alleys around the donkass restaurants and follow the zigzags down to myungDong area.........

Directions: access is from myungdong, or chungmuro subway stations. There is also a number 2 yellow bus that circulates around that area that goes up to the tower.
