Getting TO/AROUND: Kahului Airport is located on the northern edge of the land bridge between Haleakala and the West Maui Mountain Range on the island of Maui. The airport is located three miles east of the town of Kahului. This is a very nice and well kept facility. You will have little to no trouble finding your way from the terminal to baggage claim. There is a nice photo opportunity to catch a brightly colored Welcome to Maui Sign as you take the escalator down to baggage claim.

Transportation: Maui Hawaii's Kahului Airport Baggage Claim

Getting TO/AROUND: Baggage claim can be a very busy place in Maui. I would advise getting one of the hand carts to help with your luggage. The planners created rather long carousels which allow a lot of people to gather around them without being overly crowded. However, as always, people still crowd the end of the baggage carousel nearest the exits. Ground transportation is right outside the baggage claim area doorways only a few yards from where you pick up your bags but the rental car companies are a bit of a hike away.l

Transportation: Maui Hawaii - Rental Cars and Convertibles

Getting TO/AROUND: There are usually deals to be had for a rental car in Maui. My wife and I rented a convertible at Maui's Kahului Airport upon our arrival. A convertible is really an excellent way to see the sights on this beautiful island. Our first convertible (a Pontiac Firebird) had almost no trunk space and drove so poorly (a wobbly frontend) on our trip to Hana that we turned it back in to get a better car. I have to say that I would never rent a Firebird convertible again as it was not a comfortable or reliable ride. Our second convertible (a Sebring) was much better. It looked better, it drove better and it had much more trunk space. Unfortunately, it developed a flat tire while we were driving near the airport so we turned it in and got another just like it to finish out our trip. Many other car models from sedans to jeeps are available to you for rent - but consider a convertible and I think you'll be glad you did!

Transportation: Kaanapali's Free Green Trolley Shuttle Bus

Getting TO/AROUND: The Kaanapali Trolley Shuttle runs between the beach resorts at Kaanapali to-from Lahaina between 9 AM and 11 PM and stops automatically at all hotels and at condos when requested. And the best thing about these green trolley’s are that they are free of charge. All Kaanapali hotels have copies of schedules, or you can call the Kaanapali Operation Association (PHONE: 808/661-7370). I just wish I had a picture to share with you of these cute trolleys but I didn't get one.

Getting TO/AROUND: Maui residents and visitors are welcomed to use the Holo Ka’a Public Transit System! These white buses are convenient, economical, clean, dependable and AIR-CONDITIONED! On West Maui, convenient stops are made along the way from Kapalua - Napili - Kahana - Honokowai Kaanapali - Lahaina Center - Lahaina Town to Maalaea Harbor! Over on South Maui the transit system makes stops along the way from Wailea - Kihei - Maalaea Harbor! Between Kaanapali and Lahina, for example, the bus fare is only US$ 1.00 per person. And connecting transit service is now available between South, West and Central Maui.

Transportation: Gasoline is pricey in Maui

Getting TO/AROUND: Being from Georgia, USA (with the lowest gasoline prices in the United States) I found the gasoline prices in Maui to be expensive. Near Atlanta I was paying about $1.40 USD per gallon of gasoline just before I left for Hawaii. When I went to fill up my rental car's gas tank I looked at a number of stations before finally stopping at one of them. For the most part, at least in the Lahaina to airport area, regular gasoline was going right around $2.26 to $2.28 USD per gallon.

Transportation: Rent an Exotic Car or Motorcycle in Maui

'Mode': AROUND

Getting TO/AROUND: Many of the tourists that come to Maui decide to rent cars in order to have the mobility necessary to see the fabulous beaches and sites that Maui is justifiably proud to contain. Some of these car renters are conservative enough that just renting a convertible from a well-known car rental agency is being very liberal and pushing their envelope. For others, they wish they had more exciting alternatives – well, they do! In Maui it is possible to rent exotic vehicles to make the stay of an adventurous tourist even more enjoyable. A number of these places can be found off of highway 30 around Lahaina as well as in Lahaina town itself. Vehicles such as Harley Davidsons (big and small), many other motorcycle models, Viper, Prowler, Corvette, roadsters and other exotic cars. To check availability use internet searches with words like “Lahaina, harley, corvette, exotic” etc.

Transportation: Road to Hana Audio Cassette/CD Tour Guide

'Mode': AROUND

Getting TO/AROUND: If you are going to make the road trip to Hana, then seriously consider purchasing an audio tour to enhance the enjoyment of that trip. Purchasing the "Driving to Hana and the Seven Pools" audio cassette/CD by Guide/Narrator Craig Henderson is your best possible choice for this type of audio tour. I made a mistake on my last trip and tried a different vendor’s CD audio-tour. That was a big mistake on my part that I will never do again. This is the original (since 1987), and many consider it the best Hana Road Guide audio tour. It is a very well done two-sided cassette/CD which plays right on your car radio cassette/CD player and which literally guides you on the way to Hana, instructing you on the best places to stop and educating you on many points of interest along the way. For $25.00 you will get the audio cassette/CD, a one hour video, a large fold out tour map with flora guide, as well as four bottles of water and the use of a cooler for the day filled with ice. This is a real bargain and you get to keep the cassette, video and map! There is only one location on Maui that sells this original guide. It is located in a separate building at the Shell Gasoline station in Kahului and it opens about 9am daily. The Shell station is located on Route 380 in Kahului just before Route 36. Their booth is outside that Shell Service Station. If you arrive before they open, the Shell station will sell you the guide. Priced at about $25. I highly recommend it. They will even loan you a cassette player if your car doesn't have one.
