The Terai

If you have the time, there is a whole flat side to Nepal, called the southern Terai. The Terai is home to various different groups of people, and many Indian sub-groups. It is a really remarkable area to visit; the only problem is that it is so hot down there. I was there in August and it must have been about 40 degrees c. However, if the summer is the only time you have to visit Nepal, visiting the Terai is a nice option as it was very clear down there when I went in August.

Rafting on the Trisuli - Nepal

Rafting on the Trisuli

River Rafting Rafting Review

River rafting trips in Nepal are numerous and range in time length and difficulty (rapid class). I didn't have 14 days to do the entire Sum Kosi River or anything, but I did spend a day on the Trisuli, that goes down to the Indian border by Chitwan National Park. Rafting is a lot of fun in Nepal and can make an excellent trip or just day trip. Always check the tides and see how clean the rivers are before you go though.

Mountain Flights Mountain Flights Review

If you are at a loss for time and you really want to see the Himalayan giants, you should opt for the mountain flight. Buddha Air has the best one, see their website for more information at: www.buddhaair.com . Costs vary, but it was around USD92.

Here is some info provided from Buddha Air:

Everest Experience Flight

We are proud to be part of a country, nestled in the laps of the beautiful Himalayas. For many years, people have been drawn by the mystery and beauty that has surrounded them. Now with our Everest Experience flight we make your visit to the highest peak just as easy.

It is not always that you look out of your window and catch the highest peak in the world just outside of it; but when you do you definitely would want to remember the moment forever - and our Everest Experience flights allow you to do just that. An experience unlike any other, we fly you past nine gorgeous peaks in the world.

Our sightseeing flight to Mt. Everest has created a niche for itself. The powerful PT6A-67D engine enables the aircraft to fly at 25,000 feet. Circling Mount Ammadablam to enter the Khumbu valley, we take you almost five nautical miles from the highest peak in the world-Mt. Everest ( weather permitting ) - a feat accomplished by our aircrafts and pilots alone.

We provide each passenger with an individual window seat during the entire flight. Moreover, we invite all our passengers to the cockpit form where you can take some spectacular pictures of the highest peak in the world. Our full stand up cabin height of 6 feet allows you to move freely within the cabin. In addition the low noise and the instant cabin temperature allow you to have the most comfortable flight available.

Having flown more than 150,000 passengers in Everest Experience Flight in just four years and with a growing demand, we can confidently say that we have been operating the best mountain flight in the world. A flight so satisfying that one of our passenger commented "I did not climb Mt. Everest but I touched it with my heart."

Mt. Everest from the Air - Nepal

Mt. Everest from the Air

The Top of the World Mount Everest Review

Nepal is home to the top of the world, literally. Mt Everest is located here, on the border with Tibet. The 8848-meter peak rises above the thickest of clouds. A visit to Nepal is not complete without at least a view of this magnificent mountain.

Mount Everest can be seen clearly from Nagarkot, about one and a half hours from Kathmandu, as well as Daman, also about one and a half hours from Kathmandu. Those two Himalayan range viewing spots will give you the fullest view of all the Himalayas from Dauligiri to Everest.

However, Everest still looks like a little snow covered bump from these locations. If you don't have time to do the EBC Trek, you can do a mountain flight to see the mountain close up!

Buddha Air has the best mountain flight available. See their website at http://www.buddhaair.com/ .

Festival at Bhimsen Mandir - Nepal

Festival at Bhimsen Mandir

Bhimsen Mandir in Bhaktapur (1) Bhaktapur Review

The Bhimsen Temple in Bhaktapur is a large and active Hindu temple. I was there during a festival so there were many yogis and people around; it was quite an experience. The temple itself is only accessible to Hindus, but the area around the temple is open to everyone. The Bhimsen Mandir is located in the local area of Bhaktapur and is a great way to explore the culture of this "walled" city.

Traditional Architecture - Nepal

Traditional Architecture

Bhaktapur Durbar Square (2) Bhaktapur Review

Bhaktapur's Durbar Square is the political center of the city. Here is where the local government is located, as well as some cool temples and architecture. Maoists and other political groups may hold protests here (as in my case), try not to get too evolved in Nepali politics, it's pretty messy.

Potter from Bhaktapur's Potters Square - Nepal

Potter from Bhaktapur's Potters Square

Bhaktapur's Potters Square Bhaktapur Review

Bhaktapur's Potters Square is a small square where many of Bhaktapur's potters gather to make pots. They make them on huge traditional wheels and you can buy some of the completed work for quite a bargain. You have to pay them if you want to take their photo though.

Yogi from Bhaktapur during a festival - Nepal

Yogi from Bhaktapur during a festival

Bhaktapur Bhaktapur Review

The "walled" city of Bhaktapur is a definite must see in Nepal. Bhaktapur is about fifteen minutes from Kathmandu and it is a walled city, so there are very few cars allowed inside the city. There is a 750 Rupee fee to get into Bhaktapur, and it is good for a week. Bhaktapur is very unique, especially because there are so few cars within the city. It is one of the three ancient capitals of Nepal and is renound for its strong Hindu and Nuwari culture, architecture, and art (pottery in specific).

Offerings at the Kumbeshwar Mandir - Nepal

Offerings at the Kumbeshwar Mandir

Kumbeshwar Mandir in Patan Patan Review

The Kumbeshwar Mandir in Patan is a popular Hindu temple and is an interesting place to see undisturbed Hindu culture at its best. It was built in 1392 and has remained quite the same ever since (one more level was added to the temple though). It is a little further past the Golden temple, north of Patan's Durbar Square. There is no entrance fee, but note that non-Hindus are not allowed inside the actual temple buildings (but we can go around the temples). There is a holy water tank here that attracts Hindu pilgrims.
