Getting TO/AROUND: There are many travel centers that offer the best transportation deals in Thailand. You can get a seat on a mini van to locations such as Siem Reap, Cambodia / Koh Chang, Thailand / Vientiane, Laos and many many more. The vans are comfortable and are meant for backpackers/travelers. The prices are very good, shop around on KSR for the best deals (150-250 Baht to Siem Reap, 350-600 Baht to Vientiane, etc...)

SRT Trains: The Thai Rail System

  • Bangkok SRT Trains
  • Train station in Chiang Mai

    Category: Train
Getting TO/AROUND: The Thai Rail System is extermely well devoloped. Trains are a very cheap and comfortable way to travel around Thailand. Trains run commonlu between Bangkok - Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Ayutthaya, Sokhothai, Lampan, Nong Khai (Vientiane, Laos), Nakhon Si Thamarat (by Koh Samui), Hat Yai, Penang (Malaysia), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Singapore (Singapore), and Poipet (Cambodian border).

If you are on a night train I personally reccomend getting SECOND CLASS tickets. Why? First of all you get a bed to sleep in (3rd class you only get a seat), and second of all it is a lot cheaper than 1st class. In first class you get a double chamber (bunk bed in a small room with a fold down table and sink). In second class you het a fold down bunk bed (the porters set up the beds when it gets dark, they are comfortable seats until then. You a table, light, and curtains (and a window in the bottom bed* *highly reccomended. And it's just a lot of fun. You are seperated from the other people by curtains, it's a fun trip!!

Costs vary depending on class and where you want to go. A ticket to Chiamg Mai from Bangkok in second class a/c bottom bed is around 700 Baht (3rd class 350 Baht, first 950 Baht or so).

    Long distance buses: Bus
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • 'Mode': TO
    Category: Bus
Getting TO/AROUND: Traveling by bus is the cheapest way to get around Thailand. You have many options of bus travel from Bangkok. VIP tourist busses are the most expencive and the most comfortable. 3rd class government red busses are the cheapest and least comfortable. 1st class government busses are preferable for distances under 8 hours, take the VIP bus if you can aford it if you are travelinig overnight. VIP busses can be booked from the New Joe travel canter on KSR, their website is: http://www.newjoe.de/tourframe.htm . The publis bus system is very well developed and you can take a bus to just about everywhere in Thailand, and even to Malaysia, Laos, the Cambodian and Myanmar border, and Singapore.

Very interesting local custom for placing the 112 coins. I am sure the money will go to good causes as Buddhism is Thailand's main religion.
