This is something unique. Pirogovo is a huge territory of about 1 square mile (1.5 sqkm) where from all over Ukraine original ancient buildings have been brought and rebuilt again. For everybody who is interested in Ukrainian life of the past with emphasis on how the ordinary rural population has lived this is a must see.

Zoloti Vorota was the impressive building in Kiev that literally struck me down when I first saw it. On that day I left the metro station of the same name and a friend expected me outside. This was on my very first trip to Kiev when I still felt a bit helpless regarding language and new environment. And then I suddenly became aware of this enormous gate, saw its golden dome reflecting the winter sun. Wow! I had never expected to find such an extraordinary and lovely piece of architecture right in the midst of a crowded square; I always thought this was something for a museum. But Kievs Golden Gate is obviously too big for a museum.

Some may argue it is not worth mentioning this in the "Must See category" or somewhere else at all, yet for me the monument of Pantjusha the cat documents something very special. It is a document of love towards animals and maybe also an insight into what we sometimes call the "Russian soul". Ukrainians please forgive me expressing it this way but firstly love is universal and of course should not be claimed by or attributed to one nation and secondly "Russian soul" has already become a term of a very special human quality, almost a philosophical attitude that is known world-wide.

Strolling the city park will automatically lead you to the Marinskii Palace, that you approach from its rear side. Yet even from its back you can tell what a beautiful building it is.

My impression is that this is somewhat a touristic site yet worth visiting. The Bessarabka market is a cathedral-like oval building where one circular element is cut off.
