Honduras in General

Olancho

I spent 3 years in Juticalpa, Olancho. Olancho is the largest district in Honduras and is located smack in the middle of Honduras. It is a cattle and agricultural region. Juticalpa is the considered the districts capital, but Catacamas, a short 40 minute bus ride from Juticalpa is more popular. You can visit the Bocarrone National Park and do some caving while you are there. There isn´t much else to see or do, but the people are friendly and you´ll get a glimpse into the past as you see oxen pulled wagons, Olancho cowboys, and experience Olanchos yearly rodeo.

The Coast-Trujillo, La Ceiba, Tela

The Coast in Honduras is beautiful. You have the huge lush mountains to the South and the Ocean to the North. Trujillo is on the Eastern Coast. It is a small town, but with probably the best sea food around. There are a lot of Hotels to choose from pricing from very cheap to very expensive. Christmas is a good time to go as it is less crowded, but Easter is good too if you like a crowd. You can take dug out canoe coast rides for a very small fee or go up to the National Park Reserve just outside of the town. I rented a car and drove an hour towards a very small town called Lima where the ocean meets the Mosquitia. Very nice people and not crowded at all. In fact, we had the beach all to our selves. Watch out for the ocean current here as swimming can be a challenge, but body surfing other surfing is possible.
La Ceiba is now my hometown. You can experience 1st world food and lifestyles as well as 3rd. The Guriffuna Village is close by where you can eat Guriffuna food while listening and watching their own unique style of music and dance. Pico Bonito National Park is up in the mountains and an absolute must to see for those who like to enjoy natural beauty and do some hiking. La Ceiba also has ferrys or flights to Utila or Roatan Islands. La Ceiba has a great new mall and a variety of fast food. There are a lot of Honduran resteraunts too. Taxi´s are now L11.00 per person, but ask first. Buses are available for trips outside the city or to other coast cities as well. If you definately like a crowd, music, and partying, La Ceiba is the place to be at the end of May as they have the Carnival at this time. Parades, music, drinking, and anything you can think of goes on during Carnival.
Tela is between La Ceiba and San Pedro. It´s a charming town with a a definate Honduran feel. The beaches are better her than La Ceiba and there are a lot of Hotels to choose from. It´s easy to get to from San Pedro or any other place in Honduras.

Copan Ruines

If you love ancient artifacts and the Mayan Culture, definately go to Copan. You can get buses from Tegucigalpa and San Pedro almost anytime. The town itself has the old cobble stone streets and a museum. The ruins are constantly being updated and the park itself is absolutely gorgeous!! I recommend going in the winter months as other times seem to be crowded. The people are very friendly here. There are also hot springs you can visit outside of the town as well. I recommend anyone traveling to Honduras to go to Copan as you will not regret it.
