Calabria, at the tip of Italy, is more isolated than most of the other regions, thanks to the denseness of mountains and forestation of its landscape and that of Basilicata, the region above Calabria.
1. Flying Jesus:
45 minutes from Cosenza, Calabria by car, Maratea in the region of Basilicata located just above Calabria, is home to the iconic religious symbol - the flying Jesus. Apparently, the second largest semblance of Jesus Christ made by man (the biggest being the Christ figure in Rio de Janeiro), the Jesus figure in Maratea sits at the highest point of one of Maratea's many mountainous peaks. When observed at night from a distance, the huge form, its whiteness superimposed against the black of night, looks as if it's flying. Hence its name.
Calabrian food is more spicy than many other regions. Peppers are used more liberally here. While they were not spicy to me (chillies are essential in my culture's diet) at all, my napolitano friends found the typically Calabrian-style spicy foods a little too exciting for their tongues. "A bomb!!", one of them exclaimed dramatically when he chewed on a wedge of salsiccia piccante (spicy sausage). Calabrian cured meats are wonderful.
3.Jewels on the beach
Coming from a tropical region, I've never seen pebble beaches. Those in calabria were so pretty, i went to the beach everyday and for many hours at a stretch. Baked under the sun, the pebbles looked white and grey and powdery. But in the water, they took on the semblance of round jewels - semi-precious stones of all colours, shapes and sizes, their forms polished to roundness and smoothness by years and years of tossing in the sea and washing out to shore.
- Pros:Mountains at the back and the sea at the fore...beautiful!
- Cons:Crowds in summer
