South Africa Off The Beaten Path
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Off The Beaten Path: North-Eastern Mpumalanga
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • In this region of magnificent scenic beauty you'll find some of South Africa's most impressive natural sights. The 70m Bridal Veil Falls are in a very beautiful region near Sabie. In the same area you'll find the impressive Mac Mac Falls......and Mac Mac Pools, a beautiful picnic area with deep and refreshing natural pools for a nice dip.
In an even more spectacular landscape north of Graskop are the Berlin Falls.

Off The Beaten Path: Pilgrim's Rest
  • Tip Rating:
  • Pilgrim's Rest is a historical gold digger village in Mpumalanga, that has been turned into a national monument after the last mine was closed.

Off The Beaten Path: Pilanesberg National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • This national park near Sun City is smaller and more scenic than Kruger NP. The animal density is lower here, but still we got to see rhinos, elephants, hippos, nyalas, baboons and a stately lion which crossed the road just in front of our car.
Right in the center of the park there's a restaurant with a beautiful panorama deck in an old colonial building.

Off The Beaten Path: Sodwana Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Sodwana Bay is a remote beach resort in Maputaland just south of the Mozambique border. It's a very beautiful, pristine spot with endless sandy beaches and tropical scenery. Getting there involves a long drive on unpaved roads, but you'll be rewarded with one of the nicest beach resorts in South Africa.

    Off The Beaten Path: Zululand
  • Tip Rating:
  • Zululand is a land of beautiful, green rolling hills and traditional rondavel villages. It's the home of the Zulu tribe which is probably South Africa's most famous tribe due to the TV series 'Shaka Zulu'.
In Babanango, a remote backwater, it seems to be mandatory to pay a visit to Stan's Pub, apparently Michael Caine's favorite drinking hole during the filming of Zulu. While i'm not really interested in this kind of 'follow your star' travel, Stan's Pub is actually quite an experience, and they serve dirt cheap cocktails, too.

Off The Beaten Path: Golden Gate National Park
  • Tip Rating:
  • This national park in Free State is well worth a visit for its colorful sandstone formations and the fascinating vastness of the region which reminded me a lot of Arizona or Utah.

    Off The Beaten Path: Clarens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Just behind Golden Gate NP is the pretty village of Clarens , a real oddity in this vast and deserted region. Artists have set up studios here and there are many galleries and beautiful cafés in town. A true little oasis of culture in a godforsaken region.

Off The Beaten Path: Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve
  • Tip Rating:
  • Beautiful nature reserve south of Durban with a river loop in a deep, green canyon, an impressive waterfall and magnificent views.

Off The Beaten Path: Transkei / Wild Coast
  • Tip Rating:
  • The former homeland of the Xhosa tribe is still one of the poorest, but at the same time one of the most fascinating and beautiful regions of South Africa. Gentle rolling hills with colorful rondavel villages make up the hinterland and the wild coastline is absolutely breathtaking. The Xhosa people are very friendly and they're happy to welcome foreign tourists.
I have built tips for the most popular tourist destinations of the Wild Coast.

Off The Beaten Path: Port St. Johns
  • Tip Rating:
  • South Africa - Port St. Johns Lagoon
  • Port St. Johns Lagoon
  • by AndreSTGT
  • Send Photo to a Friend
  • Port St. Johns is situated on a river mouth at the Northern end of the Wild Coast. Approaching PSJ by car is breathtaking and while the town itself is nothing special, the surrounding countryside is a perfect dream with tropical vegetation, lagoons and beaches, esp. the secluded so-called 'Second Beach' is of almost magic beauty.

I think the best way to South Africa is by driving around and in it. Hire a camper van or motor home with friends and family and just enjoy the country for as long as you want. http://www.driveafrica.co.za

Hi Andre, all is not as it seems, racially speaking, and a lot of positive things are happening in our country. We just hosted an Afican family at Oak Grove Farm in the heart of the Overberg and there were R1.5m worth of cars outside Rooibos House!
