Honestly, i had never been interested in traveling through Germany. Ever since i was a child i was fascinated by foreign cultures and exotic places, so i never believed that my own country could be a satisfactory travel destination. Until the age of 21 i hadn't even visited Heidelberg, even though it's just 45 min from my home city.
In 2001, however, i toured Germany by bicycle (Travelogue of this trip on my Europe page), and i was quite fascinated, not only by the beautiful scenery and the medieval towns, but also by the cultural differences in different regions. I visited Eastern Germany for the first time and realised that i had been living in a country where incredibly fascinating and exciting historical changes had taken place and i never really cared about them.
So i decided to get to know Germany a little better, took short trips once in a while and in summer 2003 i went on a road trip through eastern and northern Germany.
Most (but not all) of my travel tips here are about lesser known places in this undeservedly undervisited part of Germany.
