Lahore is dusty, dirty and chaotic. Nevertheless, this huge city offers so many first-class attractions that it keeps you busy for at least a couple of days. Great architecture from the Moghul- and Raj-era (mosques, the Fort, the Mall) ; Shalimar Gardens; the huge tomb of Jehangir and, of course, Old Lahore with its maze of narrow alleys, bazaars, old buildings and open sewers. However, there's a different side to Lahore, just a couple of kilometers from the hustle and bustle of the Old City, there are tidy and green suburbs and chic cafes.

This city, close to the Afghan border has a fascinating, chaotic Old Town with bazaars, donkey carts and streets filled with hordes of friendly and interested people. Walk around long enough and will certainly get an invitation for a cup of tea. Don't miss a visit to the Khan Club (see restaurant tips).

There is no denying that Karachi is an ugly city. It has none of the architectural heritage of Lahore, so it's not surprising that the two major sights were built after 1950. The Jinnah Mausoleum is worth seeing for its surrounding gardens and the Tuba Mosque with the largest prayer hall in the world is quite impressive. Apart from that Karachi gets the honor of having the ugliest city beach in the world. The city does offer, however, lively markets, interesting big city life and great food.

Pakistan's young capital Islamabad mainly consists of public buildings and residential areas for well-to-do Pakistanis, but the city has a nice location at the foot of a mountain chain. There's one truly impressive sight, the gigantic modern Faisal Mosque, dramatically built below the mountains. Also worthwhile is the trip to Daman-i-koh, a viewpoint and café offering great vistas on Islamabad and the mosque.
