When I planned my road trip through Eastern Europe i initially thought about skipping Albania. I had read too many horror stories about independent travel in this country and it was so difficult to find any information at all on Albania.
But at the same time i felt challenged and eventually my curiosity was stronger than my rationality.
And as always, all the paranoia turned out to be unfounded and i'm very glad i visited this fascinating country.
After all, where in the Mediterranean can you still find beautiful deserted beaches in August?
Albania may be the poorest country in Europe, but it is not as messed-up as many Westerners think. Just like anywhere else in Eastern Europe you will find nice sidewalk cafés, well-preserved historical towns and locals who know how to enjoy life.

Bunker in Durres

The Albanian landscape is dotted with thousands of these bunkers. They were built during the communist dictatorship at the instigation of the paranoid dictator Enver Hoxha.
