At the time of my Eastern European road trip in 2002, Serbia still had very strict visa regulations (fortunately this has changed), so we decided to visit only the visa-free autonomous region of Kosovo and the Republic of Montenegro. We crossed the border near Kukes in Albania, visited Prizren and Pej in Kosovo and crossed Montenegro via Podgorica and Cetinje to Kotor on the coast. Montenegro is a small but sublimely beautiful country, almost the entire countryside consists of verdant mountains, valleys, canyons with blue rivers and dramatic coastline. There are few sizeable towns and even less industry. Before the war Montenegro was one of Europe's hottest holiday spots, but while Croatia has managed to draw tourists back, Montenegro is still struggling. But the country is as safe as it gets and anyone who visits will be rewarded with some of the most amazing scenery in Europe!! So go there now, before mass tourism rediscovers Montenegro!!! |

| Pros: | "Gorgeous scenery, pretty towns, Euroland (but inexpensive)" | | Cons: | "Ich bin so spitz dank Slivovic" | | In A Nutshell: | "Fascinating region; and the war is over!!!" |
