Cape Town Things to Do

Cape Town CBD: Downtown
  • Tip Rating:
  • If it wasn't for the spectacular views and the African souvenir market, you could think you were in the US when you take a walk through Cape Town's city center. Some older buildings have survived, but it's mostly skyscrapers, and the streets are laid out in a grid. Nevertheless it's a vibrant and attractive downtown which is not dead after the shops and offices close.

    Things To Do: Company's Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Company's Gardens is a lovely park in downtown Cape Town enclosed by beautiful colonial buildings. The views on the table mountain are great and there's also a pleasant café within the park. Definitely worth a stroll or a couple of relaxed hours with a book.

    V & A Waterfront: V&A Waterfront
  • Tip Rating:
  • The V&A waterfront is one of Cape Town's biggest attractions. It's partly made up of restored old port buildings, partly of newly built complexes. It's a busy place full of chic boutiques and cafés, a great place for eating, shopping and enjoying the advantages of Western luxury life on the cheap.
Be sure to take one of the harbor cruises which give you the opportunity to see Cape Town from the water, the views are fantastic and plenty of booze is usually included in the price, so it's fun!

    Bo-Kaap: Bo-Kaap
  • Tip Rating:
  • This neighborhood with its colorful houses is the home of Cape Town's Muslim population, many of them descendants of slaves brought in from South-East Asia.

  • Cape Town's most famous street offers beautiful architecture, pubs, cafés, restaurants and guesthouses, even Turkish baths, basically everything you need for a fun time! You might end up spending a lot of time here!

    Table Mountain: Table Mountain
  • Tip Rating:
  • Taking the cable-car up the table mountain is a 'must'. The views on all sides are spectacular and taking a walk on the summit is very pleasant.
If you only have a few days in Cape Town go there as soon as the sky is clear, the table mountain is often shrouded in mist, and there's no point in going up if you don't see anything.

    Kirstenbosch Gardens: Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden
  • Tip Rating:
  • Even if your not into botany, a visit to Kirstenbosch is a must. I don't think there is a more scenically beautiful garden anywhere else in the world. Kirstenbosch is situated on the southern slopes of the table mountain range, and there are plants and flowers in all imaginable colors. It's a magnificent sight!

    Beaches: Camps Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Camps Bay is another trendy suburb, and one of my favorite places in Cape Town. It's situated on the slopes of an impressive, green mountain range, there's a long white-sand beach, and fantastic cafés and restaurants with a view.

    Things To Do: Hout Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hout Bay on the Atlantic coast south of Cape Town is a mixture of a genuine fishing village and a tourist market located on a magnificent crescent bay. We were told by locals that this is the place for fresh, inexpensive seafood in the region, so we checked out the Kingfisher Restaurant at the harbour, and indeed, the king prawns were delicious.

A very good and complete page on Cape Town. I was here only 2 days and had luck: the table mountain did not have the table cloth on when we got up. Wonderful pictures here, too!
