Jo'burg has the not very flattering reputation of being the most dangerous city in the world. A soulless ghetto which has once been the business capital of Africa. This reputation is undeserved and i'm happy to admit that i really liked Jo'burg a lot. It's a huge city with extremely rich northern suburbs and extremely poor southern townships. Downtown Jo'burg, supposedly a very dangerous place, is a pleasure to explore on foot with its very African markets and historical buildings dwarfed by huge skyscrapers. One of Jo'burgs highlights is the view from the 52nd floor of the Carlton Building. Don't miss it! Also in the city center is Newtown, a "new" cultural precinct with theaters, bars and restaurants that was established to bring people back to downtown Jo'burg, esp. the white population who all fled to the suburbs after the end of Apartheid. The nicest neighborhood for dining and nightlife is Melville with plenty of good restaurants and trendy cafés to choose from. |
