Brussels

Two languages

Brussels, arcarde du cinquantenaire
Brussels is bilingual. Flemish (Dutch) and French are both spoken in our capital.
The original inhabitants of Brussels switch from one language to the other in one sentence. It's a nice juicy language for those who speak both, and a kind of Chinese for those who don't.
I have sympathy for the real Brussels language which is unfortunately dissapearing, due to immigration from both Walloons and Flemish people, who often prefer to speak their own language.

The casual tourist in Brussels, who speak English will rarely get a sniff of a certain bilingual tension.
Brussels City Hall

The Grand Place

The Grand Place, with the City Hall, here on the photo, is the main tourist attraction of Brussels, and in a certain way the center of Belgium. When crossing the gate of the City Hall, to the inside patio, a star on the ground shows the point from where the distances to other towns in Belgium are calculated.

All the streets starting from this square place lead to attractions in the immediate neighbourhood. That's the reason why most tourists only see the Grand Place area. Too bad, while the Brussels' heart is also beating in other quarters.
Under construction. More later...

There certainly are some beautiful buildings in Brussels. I particularly like the Bread House. Nice tips!
