Things To Do: The Lille Gate (Rijselpoort)
  • Tip Rating:
  • This gate at the South entrance of the fortress Ypres, is the oldest still used gate. Its robust Burgundian towers go all the way back to the fourteenth century.

  • 85 years after the end of the First World War visitors to Ieper are amazed by the way in which the medieval city has been rebuilt. It stands almost exactly as it was prior to its destruction.
The Cloth Hall/ Belfry has been rebuilt brick by brick.

Today this monument houses the Tourist information center and the famous museum "In Flanders' Fields.

  • This Inner yard is also the entrance to the Museum In Flander's Fields.

Take a look upwards and admire the tall towers shooting up into the sky.

For the museum in Flanders' Fields: walk into the door in front and walk up the stairs to the left.

Good to know: there are public bathrooms in the building.

Flanders Field Museum: Feel and smell the atmosphere of the Great War
  • Tip Rating:
  • This museum is really a must when you intend to explore the region of WWI.

When paying the entrance fee, you get a “ID” card of a person who had to go through this war. Along your visit you can put this card into one of the computers in the museum and follow this person and his experiences during the war.

There is more to see and to do (the museum is interactive) than I can describe, but one hall impressed me very much: it’s a place where you can feel the battle at the front and in the trenches.
A dark room with a mist of smoke making your nose and your eyes sting, sounds of bombing and gunshots followed by shouts and moans. A macabre sound and light show…

Menin Gate: 54.869 missed soldiers in the Menin Gate
  • Tip Rating:
  • This is the most famous Britisch WWI monument. It's built in classic style, after the design of Sir Reginald Blomfield.

In this gate are the names of 54.869 missed soldiers and lots of artificial poppies. In honour to these soldiers there is a ceremony every night at 20 pm.

    Ramparts: The ramparts
  • Tip Rating:
  • It probably was too cold at that moment (Januray), otherwise I would have enjoyed the walk.
During Winter the remparts make a bit a sorry sight, but in Summer, when the trees have leaves, I am sure it must be a very pleasant walk.

Directions: We started at the Menin Gate, but there are stairs all around to access at the remparts

Great idea to get an "ID" card at the Flanders Fields Museum of someone who was in WWI and follow this person and his experiences. So it's not just a bunch of statistics, but the fate of a real person. Good that it is possible to rent a bike in Ypres.

Such sad history, but very interesting page. I really must visit Belgium again one day and see more of it.
