Staufen im Breisgau Travel Guide: 21 reviews and 80 photos

Staufen is a German town, close to the Rhine and the French border. It is rather touristy because of it's small and charming historic center. The main street, showing on the photo is far more nicer than it looks here. Unfortunately we arrived on a rainy day, which is not favorable for taking pictures. The well kept houses are all painted in different fresh colors. There are several shops with hand craft, art and things to make a tourist spend his money.
I think Staufen is worth a short detour in your itinerary. Also it is a nice place to overnight.

Faust town

Wikipedia page about Staufen im Breisgau
: "It is noted in history and culture for its association with Dr Faustus who, according to legend, sold his soul to the Devil at an inn here".

Faust, who lived between 1480 and 1540 was an intellectual who studied astrology, chemistry and phylosophy. He was a doctor and a magician.

We overnighted in the very room where he made a pact with the devil. We took a photo of the sculpture which was made in the walls of his box bed . Very thrilling...

More about the room and the hotel where he stayed until he died, in my tips.

I thought this little corner was worth a photo.

Notice the brush, hidden in the niche above the fountain. Wondering where it is used for.

Is there any end to the number of these wonderful German towns? Staufen looks fabulous, Martine. I especially liked the hotel and restaurant. Kate

Pitty that you couldn't take more time to explore the castle...all the more reason to venture back someday then perhaps.. Doctor Faust must have been a bit of a character...Not too sure about the brush..do you have any ideas???

So this is where Dr. Faustus sold his soul to the devil! Great that you slept in his room, even if it did smell like Mephisto had just left. (Good thing he wasn't still there.) Glad you liked the Faust menu in the Fauststube.
