Saint-Valéry and the Bay de Somme

by Martinewezel - last update: Nov 10, 2006

Baie (Bay) de Somme and St-Valéry

St- Valéry sur Somme
Located in Picardy, at the large estuary of the river Somme in northern France, this bay is a famous ecological and residential area.

I appreciated not only the wild scenery, but especially the charming little villages with stunning old houses, castles, churches and chapels. Each bend hides another surprize.

St- Valéry, the main town, with it's Medieval old town and maritime quarters with picturesque narrow streets and houses is quite touristic. It can be very crowded in high season.

The estuary

The estuary is flat and sandy. Interesting for a walk in the swamps at low tide along the fishy ponds. The flora and fauna are typical. There is also a special kind of grass growing in the estuary, called "salicorne". You can pick and taste during your walk. The best period for this is from May until July. Later it becomes bitter and dry.
la première vague(the first wave)Somme Bay, France

La première vague (the first wave)

The salty meadows daily flooded by the sea at high tide, are full of grazing sheep at low tide.
Very special is the so-called "première vague" (the first wave).
Not to miss! The first wave at upcoming tide in the bay is faster an stronger than anyone could imagine.
Run before the water outruns you!

Sounds like a lovely place to visit -- but perhaps on some other day besides Monday. I think I'd like the hiking and the steam train.

I was born not far from St Valery but have left long ago! Thanks for this virtual visit! I should pay a visit for real, someday! Do you know that St Valery is well known among gardeners for its carrots? St Valery carrots variety is the best!
