Hello from Belgium

by Martinewezel - last update: Jun 25, 2008

Typical city scenery in Flanders.
I took this photo in Mechelen, the town where I was born and spent my youth. Since I left Mechelen, 25 years ago, it changed for the better. Just as in most historic towns, lots of old houses have been restored and cars are discouraged to drive into the the old town center.
If you are fond of history, step-roofed houses, tapestry, chocolate and beer... visit Flanders!
Belgium

And the other part of Belgium?

South of the linguistic frontier is called Wallonia. More rural than Flanders and most unfortunately less intereresting for international tourism.

Wrongfully, while the South of our country holds lots of trumps.
castle in the Molignée (Belgium)
Wallonia is relaxed and less strict than Flanders. I especially like the Molignée region between Namur and Dinant. No big must sees, but lots of interesting places such as castles, abbeys, old farms and picturesque villages.

My favourite painting

Le déjeuner d’huîtres (The oyster lunch) from Jean-François de Troy, a piece of the collection of the Duke d’Aumale, hanging in his castle in Chantilly (France).

Wonderful detailed active scene, showing a bunch of aristocrats having lunch after a hunting party. Watch the faces, the red cheeks and noses, the men looking up the champagne cork popping, the glasses resting on the table in a bowl of ice…a humourous snapshot.

Hi Martine, thanks for your visit to my Milan page. Yes, I think it's the least they can do to warn people about what can't be seen from the boxes. Unfortunately not everybody reads their website, and those who don't can be bitterly disappointed.

Thanks for visiting my Essen page! In the east of the US, you will likely see many Dunkin' Donuts (IMO better than Starbucks). They have regular -- or you can get flavors such as Hazlenut or French Vanilla. Enjoy! Cheers, Bill

Nee, maar voor sentimentele redenen hou ik ervan.
