Bastogne, Belgium's highest situated city (525 meter above sealevel) became famous because of the Battle des Ardennes.

Losing at several fronts, the German Army decided taking in Antwerp. First step towards Antwerp, was to take in Bastogne. The so-called Battle des Ardennes (december 1944 - january 1945).
They failed, because of the resistence of the 101st Airborne with General Patton and General McAuliffe.

It was the largest battle in the West during the war :
600.000 Americans fought it, and 80.000 were killed, captured, or wounded.
The Germans lost 30.000 dead, 40.000 wounded, and 30.000 were POWs.
