  • Agia Sofia became a mosque and all images and Christian symbols were removed. It is a museum now. Christian images survive side by side with those of Islam. Inside there are some huge roundels, some 30feet in diameter were added in the mid 19th century. Calligraphy is raised to an art form in Islam and these were the work of a master. The words are the names of God and can be seen repeated many time in the mosques of Turkey.

  • The Topkapi Palace (Topkapi Sarayi) was the residency of Ottoman sultans for nearly 400 years. It was built in 1453. The treasures of the Sultans are still mostly intact because Topkapi Palace was never attacked by enemy armies.
The Treasury Room of Topkapi Palace displays one of the world's largest diamonds, the 86-carat Spoon Maker. Other treasure is the jeweled sultan's throne.

Topkapi Palace: The Harem of Topkapi Palace
  • Tip Rating:

It was not rare for one of the sultan’s wives to poison the son of another wife to insure that her son would accede to the throne.
