Seafront with castle still in background

Dover seafront

On a nice day it is really pleasant to stroll down to the seafront, although the sea here is still inside the harbour walls there is often plenty going on.

It iusually looks nice and tidy which is always a plus.

Directions: In between Dover town and the sea!!!

Charles Stewart Rolls - Dover

Charles Stewart Rolls

First man to fly the channel both ways

Charles Stewart Rolls became the first man to fly the channel non stop both ways in 1910, ubfortunately in July of the same year his Wright biplane broke up in flight and crashed from 20 feet and he broke his skull and thus chalked up another first becoming Britain's first aviation death.

The Ferry Port

Otherwise known as Dover Eastern Docks. This is one of the busiest ferry ports in the world.

Three companies run ferries from here to Calais and Dunkirque, Norfolk Line, Sea France and P&O Stena Line.

There is a new berth being built at the moment.

Address: Can't miss it

And you can still see the castle - Dover
And you can still see the castle

Castle Street, Dinos restaurant is here and a fine example of a Victorian street, it has not changed much in a long while. I think this is the nicest street in Dover as it channels the field of vision nicely to the castle.

Lots of fish - Dover
Lots of fish

The pleasure boat harbour at Dover is not very big but it must have something about it, it was full of fish today (and my camera is not very clear but you can see the fish in the harbour quite clearly.

Waterfall at Kearsney Abbey - Dover

Waterfall at Kearsney Abbey

KEARSNEY ABBEY

Kearsney Abbey is situated about a mile inland and is a delightful place to visit. There are very picturesque gardens to walk around and lakes which are a home for a variety of wild birds.

There is also a tea room where you can refresh yourself, although I would choose to try one of the local pubs in preference.

All in all a place worth spending a quiet couple of hours in.

Address: On the Alkham Valley Road out of Dover

The castle at night, truly a fantastic sight - Dover

The castle at night, truly a fantastic sight

Dover Castle-Absolutely brilliant on a clear day!!

Dover Castle, visible from nearly everywhere in Dover (except the railway station), looks out across the English Channel with a superb view on a clear day.

There is 2000 years of history in the place. The keep is medieval and gives an impression of the times of King Henry VIII, it is very interesting to look round.

There are secret war tunnels (not that secret, there are lots of signposts showing where they are) which you can visit and get a taste of second world war life.

There are also plenty of places to picnic in the grounds and some open areas which kids will love.

A magical place with interest through the ages.

Cost is GBP8 for adults. Family ticket GBP20.

Well worth the admission fee.

Address: Dover, can't miss it

Directions: Stand anywhere and look up, it is overlooking the harbour
